Site by site full module implementation is part of co-existence strategy

J.D. Edwards, a leading provider of enterprise business application solutions has won a multi-million pound contract over SAP and Baan to supply Delta Plc with OneWorld and Worldsoftware. Delta will be using the software in its Plumbing Products Division, which is the market leader in end feed fittings to the plumbing trade. With a geographic spread of over 26 sites across fourteen countries including the developing economies of Eastern Europe, Delta were looking for an integrated pan-European ERP system, to improve service to customers across Europe and efficiency across the supply chain.

Delta Plumbing Products is part of Delta plc, an international industrial group with annual sales of nearly £900 million. In recent years the plumbing business has been expanded across Europe and Delta is committed to further capitalise on the opportunities offered by its strong position in the European market. Under the leadership of its new managing director, Manfred Halper, the company was looking to replace its existing bespoke systems with a fully integrated ERP suite to improve efficiency and better manage the business across fourteen countries including Germany, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland and the UK.

Explained Phillip King, divisional director, " Customer service is key to our success and is something we are always looking to improve upon. As a leading plumbing fittings specialist, we had three main requirements when choosing an ERP vendor. With our high

volume manufacture taking place across several sites in Europe, our need to be able to access a common system to forecast accurately and manage the supply chain process effectively. Improving control of our inventory process was another key requirement as was increasing efficiency across the process. OneWorld and Worldsoftware are both highly flexible products. We have taken advantage of J.D.Edwards' co-existence strategy and will be going live on this basis. This means we will be able to migrate PCs at our pace, rather than having to restructure to fit the technology."

He continued, " Another deciding factor in our decision to purchase from J.D.Edwards was their rapid response when putting together a high level team to interface with our buying team. Their approach instilled confidence in us and showed a partnership attitude which we deemed to be important in such a large project."

J.D. Edwards OneWorld and Worldsoftware share the same database and seamlessly interact with each other to support integrated business processes.

Outlining the anticipated benefits of the solution, Alex Craig, IT manager said, " As a group we have a wide geographic spread. Controlling inventory means that people intensive routines such as production planning can be improved to ensure duplication is not taking place. For example, some main product lines are manufactured in more than one location. Matching customer demand with factory loading can be complex. Without an integrated system the process is a major undertaking - both labour intensive and time consuming. With J.D. Edwards' ERP solution, this process can be done in hours rather than weeks giving supply chain savings to us and a more efficient service to our customers."

Running on the IBM AS/400 platform the Plumbing Division will be implementing the full ERP suite, including financials, sales order processing, materials management, inventory and production across all 26 sites involved in the project. Implementation began in October 1998 at the Divisional Head Office in West Bromwich with the first four largest manufacture sites - UK (two sites), Germany and Spain scheduled to go live by October, 1999.

Trevor Salomon, marketing director, J.D. Edwards, said, "This co-existence deal reinforces the value of OneWorld and Worldsoftware within an international as well as local business environment. Our ERP solutions share the same database and co-exist on multiple platforms. OneWorld is architectured to ensure that future technology changes across the business will be low-risk and this will help Delta to maximise on business efficiencies, streamline supply chain operations and continue to offer high levels of service to their customers."

Roll-out will take place on a site-by-site basis with the full suite being implemented at each site. A truly international team of experts from France, Spain, Germany and Scotland has been assembled and is already in training. They will be implementing the software across Europe.

Looking forward Phillip King said, "OneWorld is a solution for our future. Flexibility in the international business environment is essential and we believe OneWorld and Worldsoftware will give us a competitive edge in the market."
