The Catholic Action Group (C.A.G) , expresses its support of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child's (SPUC) request for a boycott by Catholic's of Red Nose Day. All Catholic's of good conscience should support this request and donate their monies instead to mainstream Pro-Life groups in protest.

Earlier, John Smeaton of SPUC was quoted as saying "Whilst Comic Relief claims that its funds are not used to support abortions, and they have even offered to hand over their books to the Catholic bishops in support of their claim, the fact is that Comic Relief allocated an enormous grant of over a quarter of million pounds to the strongly pro-abortion organisation Reproductive Health Alliance Europe in the year 2001-2002"

In support of this assertion, C.A.G questions how a Catholic Bishop can so quickly issue a statement on this issue but could not do the same when its own agency CAFOD openly advocated condoms as reported in The Tablet, Daily Telegraph and The Times in September 2004.

John Gunn, C.A.G's National Coordinator said "We respect and fully support the SPUC position on this. Pro-Life issues are at the coal face of Catholicism and must be supported if we are to keep in good conscience. Our English Bishops, considering their apostolic position, remain far too silent and passive on this important issue. There are over 180,000 abortions carried out in this country alone each year. The Abortion issue deserves more of their attention and of Catholics in general. We are also amazed at how quickly the Bishops' can establish all the facts and issue a statement in a few hours but ignore SPUC's evidence as out of hand? If we contrast this with the way they have handled the Cafod Scandal, it beggars belief. We asked for a clear public statement to quell the Cafod scandal immediately in October 2004 and none was forthcoming. As a result we have had to openly campaign to right this wrong".
