System Associates delivers which boasts powerful postcode search facility and online visitor poll

The website launched by Mayor Ken Livingstone, is dedicated to making it easier for Londoners to recycle more. The site is designed to educate an estimated 8400 visitors per month about the recycling services provided by each local borough. It utilises a content management framework that will not only allow non-technical staff within the Greater London Authority (GLA) to update the pages themselves, but also features a powerful postcode search facility and online visitor poll.
Input a London postcode into the search facility and a page is displayed which gives information on the recycling services near to the specified location, with distances and details of the facilities themselves. This information changes as services are improved and the website is developed. This aspect of the website is maintained by the Recycle for London team at the Greater London Authority, information is input into Excel spreadsheets and uploaded into the database from there – instantly updating the web site itself.

“The content management system has made the web site a very powerful tool in the Recycle for London campaign that runs until April 2006,” explained a spokesperson for the Mayor of London. “It creates the essential link between awareness and action. We wanted a service that would cover recycling collections from home and the whole range of other services.”

78 per cent of Londoners now have a recycling collection from their home, which has increased from 57 per cent in 2001-2. The number of households receiving an organic recycling collection has doubled since last year to over half a million.

About Recycle for London
The Recycle for London project has received a grant of £3.5 million from the London Recycling Fund. The London Recycling Fund is a £50 million fund that aims to help London Boroughs and waste authorities recycle more household waste through improving arrangements for recycling in London. The Fund operates through a joint initiative between the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority (GLA), the Association of London Government (ALG) and London Waste Action. The Fund was agreed by the Government in March 2002 and has been allocated core funding of £46.95 million over the four years 2002 to 2006 by DEFRA from the Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund for England. In March 2004 WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) also agreed to contribute £2.588 million to help fund communications and awareness recycling campaigns in London. Since April 2002 the Fund, which aims to lever additional funds into projects, has awarded grants to over 130 different recycling projects run by the London boroughs and waste authorities, which together with the matched funding represents a total investment in new recycling infrastructure and arrangements with a total value of over £100 million.

The Recycle for London campaign aims to encourage people to recycle more, both in terms of volume and breadth of materials
