Want to work in the music industry? Enrol on a new course, and Stevie Wonder's UK manager could end up as your business manager.
Keith Harris has 30 years' experience in the music industry. He is Stevie Wonder's current UK manager and Snr Fellow at the University of Westminster where he teaches on its commercial music degree. He is also the former head of promotion for Motown UK and chair of The Manager's Forum.
Now Keith has launched a short course for anyone wanting to start a business in the music industry, whether as a
- singer, songwriter or musician,
- in A&R,
- in production
- or launching a studio, label or act.
The course gives a comprehensive introduction to the industry from every angle, showing how it works and how to get ahead. Called The Music Business Course, it runs for eight Saturdays from 7 May 2005 in West London (Harrow).
Its content includes: an introduction to the industry and who holds the power; how to create and launch an act; how to get publicity for your music 'business'; essential knowledge on income, finance and tax for creative businesses; management and publishing deals; and - critical in the music industry - negotiation skills. There is also a full day at a studio where students learn how to get the most out of their recording time.
This is great news for anyone who wants to have a music career but doesn't know how the industry works. However the added benefit is that any delegate on the course can then apply for extra one-to-one mentoring with the teaching team.
This means personal on-going attention from Keith or his co-tutor on the course, Stephen Gurevitz - a specialist in music production, owner of a recording studio, producer and musician.
'The Music Business Course' runs in association with local enterprise agency Harrow in Business which has been helping businesses launch and grow in West London since 1983. It costs £75 a day.
