EMBARGO: 00.01 MONDAY 4 APRIL: Today sees the launch of a new service from Tesco - the Tesco Personal Shopper Service - the first on-site consultation service to be offered to UK supermarket customers. Trialing in five of its key stores - London Kensington, Newcastle, Handforth (South Manchester), Culverhouse Cross (Cardiff) and Glasgow St Rollox - Tesco customers will be able to book a complimentary nutritional shopping consultation with a registered Nutri People nutritionist who will guide them around the store advising on shopping for health, fitness, family, budget, special diet or inspiration.

The service supports RACE FOR LIFE 2005, which is sponsored nationally by Tesco. From May 4th to July 24th, approximately 425,000 women will run, jog or walk 5km at 162 venues across the UK, raising an expected £23m for Cancer Research UK.

The Tesco Personal Shopper Service has been developed in response to a rise in customer demand for nutritional direction when carrying out their daily or weekly shop. Recent research has proved that around half of all cancers diagnosed in the UK could be prevented by changes to lifestyle and experts now also think that around a third of all cancer cases are linked to diet.

Commenting, Tim Mason, Marketing Director, Tesco said: "Helping our customers get to know more and more about healthy lifestyles and nutritious diets will enable them to make more informed choices from the huge range of fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy produce stocked in Tesco, as well as the Healthy Living range. In effect, they'll be able to write their own 'food prescription' - a better shopping list for a healthier life"

Each consultation will last approximately 30 minutes, during which time customers can ask their nutritionist to advise them on one of six categories:
- Healthy: how to choose healthier alternatives to their normal shop and
what foods may help towards preventing cancer
- Fitness: what to eat to prepare for RACE FOR LIFE 2005
- Family: how to ring the changes and keep the kids happy and healthy
- Budget: how to get more from their shopping budget
- Dietary: for those with special requirements who need some inspiration
- Inspiration: for those stuck in a rut with food

Commenting on the Tesco Personal Shopper Service, Denise Chester, Director Nutri People said: "Not only is it for a great cause but it is a fantastic opportunity to get the benefits of nutritional healing out to the general public and to people that may otherwise never have thought about food and nutrition. It is very encouraging to see Tesco getting involved in this type of initiative and we are excited to be involved in helping the UK's population use nutrition and food as a route to a better quality of life."
