New contracts for pharmacies – No problem for Vantage Health Watch
Care at the counter – Pharmacies offer Vantage Health Watch services

New contracts for pharmacies in England and Wales designed to provide a wider range of services.have come into force today. In anticipation of this move Vantage Pharmacies established Vantage Health Watch two years ago. It offers services including blood pressure monitoring, smoking cessation, cholesterol testing, weight management and travel health.

Pharmacists have an increasingly important role in educating people about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Ajit Malhi, pharmacist and Professional Services Manager for Vantage Health Watch, says, “We already have over 300 pharmacies across the UK offering these extra services. Vantage pharmacies are part of your community where you can find friendly and professional advice.

“People find their local pharmacy an easy and convenient way to check and look after their health. There is no need to make an appointment; you can just drop in when it suits you.”

Worryingly, one in three of the UK population are estimated to have high blood pressure but only a third of those with the condition are aware of this fact. Of the 30% of people who receive treatment, just approximately 10% have their blood pressure controlled satisfactorily.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, left unchecked, can lead to coronary heart disease which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. It affects 3.5% of the UK adult population and kills more than 128,500 people each year, of which almost 50,000 are under the age of 75.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is largely preventable thanks to healthy lifestyles and effective management of high blood pressure and cholesterol.

The British Heart Foundation says that despite recent improvements, CHD remains the single most common cause of death in both men and women in the UK, and that the national death rate from CHD is still amongst the highest in the western world.

Ajit says, “We are now offering blood pressure monitoring services to a wide group of patients including the well and the worried well, those with a family history of heart disease, the elderly and people on blood pressure medication.

“People who need regular checks find the pharmacy one of the easiest ways of getting the attention of trained health professionals.

“As tackling CHD is such an important issue, pharmacists have an increasingly important role in providing convenient, value for money, screening services, which over time will benefit the health of the nation.”
