BridgeHead reveals tools to beat out-of-control data growth
New software reports and deletes irrelevant data, and performs continuous, automated migration of data for effective ILM
Ashtead, UK – 12th April 2005 - BridgeHead Software today revealed policy-based storage management software to help organisations regain control over their data growth by removing as much as 80% of their data from primary storage, at an early stage, to accessible archiving for the long term or deleting it.
The new solution – named HT FileStore - enables organisations to perform continuous, automated migration of data to appropriate storage media, facilitating effective data lifecycle management and dramatically reducing the huge resources currently consumed by manual data migrations.
By automatically removing unnecessary data from primary storage, the backup window needed to backup ‘live’ data is significantly reduced. Less data on primary storage also provides other financial and operational benefits, including a reduction on primary disk storage expenditure, quicker defragmentation of disks and lower overall data management costs.
HT FileStore is a policy-based storage management module that monitors and cleans up files on primary storage, archiving those files that need to be retained to secondary storage. The system:
• scans and report across entire, distributed file systems
• can be set to delete unwanted files according to predefined policy
• can be set to totally remove files from primary storage to secondary storage (“active archive”) keeping a full index online for transparent user access
• can be set to remove files and leave behind a placeholder file (stub) for totally transparent application and user access (“transparent archive”)
• can manage file retention periods, protect data from unauthorised access and provide a complete audit trail of all file access and file movement (“compliant archive”)
• can be driven manually but more usually is set to be fully automated
HT FileStore can operate as a standalone storage management module or be wrapped around other applications, as required.
Hamish Macarthur, CEO and founder of Macarthur Stroud International, said: “Setting policies to automatically manage storage resources is a key benefit for users. When this is achieved by a tool that also addresses archiving and compliance policies, SRM is now addressing more than lower storage costs, it is delivering real benefits to the business. It is not just identifying a problem, it is doing something about it.”
Tony Cotterill, CEO of BridgeHead Software, said: “Up to 80 per cent of an organisation’s data has not been accessed in the previous 90 days, and at least 60 per cent of it will never be required in the future, even for compliance purposes. But most IT managers contribute to their own problems by adopting a single ‘backup everything’ strategy instead of parallel ‘delete irrelevant data’ and ‘archive appropriate data’ strategies.
“However their choice – until today - has been an understandable one: without a means of control, they had little option but to throw hardware and ‘backup everything’ policies at the problem,” he added. IDC recently estimated that average data growth will be 50% compound until 2007.
Using the active archive approach, HT FileStore physically and totally removes files from primary storage, leaving no residual file stubs or directory entries. Instead, those files are moved to secondary storage, where they are fully indexed and secured for future use, removing the ongoing need to backup and manage the online files.
The transparent archive approach gives all the features of active archive with the added benefit of totally transparent access for users and applications such that the data files still appear to be online even though the content has been archived.
With the compliant archive approach, ensures that data files are managed in accordance with their importance and their worth, based on the individual requirements of an organisation. Only files that are needed are retained, and those files are kept only for as long as necessary.
HT FileStore allows the organisation to determine its own storage management policies, defining which files should be retained, for how long, and the most appropriate media type for their storage. It can use any device or media type across the network, and uses built-in intelligence to make decisions where necessary. For example, if the requested device-type is unavailable, HT FileStore will select an alternative.
FileStore is a core element of BridgeHead’s Integrated Storage Management (ISM) suite. BridgeHead’s ISM portfolio is used to build platforms that make available the whole set of basic storage management services - replication, backup, migration, archiving, and HSM - to any application throughout an environment. The actual mechanisms used are of no concern to an application; an application simply calls for a service, which is delivered by the platform.
