Dr Jo Clarke is to join the Centre of Supervision Training (CST) to develop and deliver new Masterclasses in supervision and human risk management. Her inaugural Masterclass ‘Heroes or Victims? – Staying Buoyant in High Risk Jobs’ will become part of CST’s new 2005 series commencing this autumn.

Jo Clarke PhD. is a Chartered Forensic Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society with 15 years experience in HM prison service as a practising Forensic Psychologist and clinical resource manager.

In ‘Heroes or Victims’ Jo Clarke addressees the management of risk for practitioners and other professionals working on potentially harmful cases such as the detection of sexual offences or rehabilitation of offenders.

Commenting on the appointment John Nixon, CST Business Manager, said. ‘We were delighted when Jo accepted the invitation to join the Centre, she brings such valuable supervisory experience and a wealth of knowledge from her recent doctoral research into the impact on staff of working therapeutically with sex offenders.’

In addition to introducing ‘Heroes or Victims’ Masterclass, Jo is to team up with the centre’s leader Dr Michael Carroll, to produce more unique Masterclasses on topical issues impacting supervision in the world of counselling and coaching.

The Centre for Supervision Training specialises in training for Supervision and Coaching. Since opening in October 2003 it has attracted 800 attendees to its series of open Masterclasses! Dr. Michael Carroll leads the Centre and is responsible for its curriculum.
A Chartered Counselling Psychologist and a BACP Senior Registered Practitioner, he works as a counsellor, supervisor, trainer and consultant to organisations in both public and private sectors, specialising in the area of employee well-being. He has lectured and trained both nationally and internationally. Michael is Visiting Industrial Professor in the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol and winner of the 2001 British Psychological Society Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Psychology.


Dr. Jo Clarke is an Honorary Teaching Fellow in the Department of Psychology, University of York and has been accredited to provide ‘The Challenge of Change Programme’ developed by DR. Derek Roger of the Work Skills Centre.

She has extensive experience working in a diverse public sector organisation, as well as a range of private and charitable companies, as a clinician, trainer, consultant and researcher. She has applied the results of several years’ research to the development of comprehensive training packages, designed to support both individuals and organisations in achieving their goals in good psychological health.

Jo has 15 years experience as a Forensic Psychologist in HM Prison Service with particular focus in the field of sex offender treatment. In addition to the assessment and treatment of offenders, she has been responsible for the selection, training and supervision of treatment providers. For example she led the team responsible for establishing the internationally renowned unit for the assessment and treatment of Sexual Murderers at HMP Brixton.
During her time at HM Prison Service Headquarters Jo was responsible for the domestic and international recruitment of psychologists, including the design of innovative, competency based assessment centres, and the training of assessors.
