…FileMaker solution for CMR saves thousands of pounds for UK businesses …

LONDON, UK – 15th April 2005 - In the light of a recent Energywatch investigation which revealed that 40,000 complaints were made last year about inaccurate residential utility bills, FileMaker is helping UK businesses to make sure they aren’t being overcharged for electricity, gas and water services.

Energywatch said 40,000 complaints about inaccurate bills were investigated last year. In one extreme case, a Bolton-based electricity customer received a demand for £38,000 - even though she has a pre-pay meter and does not pay by bill. Although a similar investigation into business billing has not taken place, there is clear evidence of widespread overcharging in business utility billing, costing UK companies substantial sums of money.

FileMaker is being used in this context to help CMR Consultants Limited (CMR), a leading provider of energy, water and telecoms procurement services. CMR’s Utilities Bureau service monitors and manages electricity, gas and water accounts for their clients. For various reasons, utilities bills are often incorrect and without a detailed knowledge of the industry, it is very difficult and time consuming for businesses to check that bills are correctly rendered.

Key to the bureau service is CMR’s bespoke software solution, built around FileMaker, by leading FileMaker development house Data Creator. Clients who use the service vary in size from large multi-site groups with over 400 sites, to clients with only a single site. Energy and Water expenditure can vary from a few thousand pounds up to £1,000,000 on a single site.

According to Dylan Cooper at CMR: “The type and number of errors found by our FileMaker solution can be as high as 30% of the invoices we check - particularly when a client changes supplier. By regular checking and validation of client bills, CMR eliminates billing errors before the problem gets out of hand – thus ensuring peace of mind for our clients that they are not being overcharged or indeed paying someone else’s bill!”

Examples of errors found by CMR include:

- a water bill for one client showed figures on an invoice for Surface Water Drainage which did not match the published figures issued by the Water Company. FileMaker quickly picked up the error and the client received a cheque refund for £1,321.

- On a site that transferred its electricity supply from one supplier to another, the new supplier charged night-time electricity at an incorrect rate. FileMaker, using pre-programmed contracted rates, quickly spotted the error and the overcharge was corrected by the supplier amounting to £150 in a single month.

“CMR and their customers are saving literally hundreds of thousands of pounds every year through the power of FileMaker,” says Andy Macdonald at Data Creator, the developer of the CMR software. “Using FileMaker means that CMR are able to identify errors in a matter of minutes.”
