mrVisitor is the UK’s first quality website to unify promotion of domestic destinations for discerning travellers. mrVisitor officially launched on 1st April 2005. Since the launch of, over 750 tourism businesses have uploaded their details to the web site and there have been up to 25,000 hits a day. National Trust, English Heritage, Best Western, Pride of Britain Hotels and several tourism boards such as Gloucester, Bath, Portsmouth and Worcestershire have endorsed mrVisitor by uploading their listings. mrVisitor provides free information on countrywide destinations and events for the emerging generation of 25 to 45 year-olds who work hard and want to make the most of their weekends. mrVisitor, covering John O’Groats to Lands End, focuses on providing honest information and opinion on interesting destinations and events, rather than primarily acting as commerce-biased booking agent. mrVisitor uses experienced travellers and writers to review and edit locally submitted information on shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, events and happenings.

Unlike most domestic travel sites, which tend to be parochially self-designed, mrVisitor is an expertly designed, polished website. Advertising and media entrepreneur, Matt Cooper, used his extensive new media experience and passion for travel to inspire the much-needed mrVisitor. mrVisitor utilizes the interactivity afforded by online media to profile users, using a series of tickbox menus, so that they can receive information specifically tailored to their individual preferences. Once a user’s journey has been planned through mrVisitor, a print-able and email-able itinerary is automatically compiled, complete with all relevant reviews, maps and guides. These services are completely free.

mrVisitor also helps champion the small local business by offering free coverage on the website. So mrVisitor is both free for users and free for businesses. This win-win model has been cleverly developed by working closely with local ‘partners’: each county has an exclusive partner who, in return for funding, receives local marketing and branding through the mrVisitor website. Thus far, regional partners include FirstGroup (the UK’s largest bus operator and owners of First Great Western and First ScotRail) and Aircoach and smaller advertisers such as Butlins and Hertz. mrVisitor has also been supported by tourism boards in Portsmouth, Bath, Gloucester, Shetland, and Worcestershire, amongst others, who have promoted the service to their members. VisitBritain, realizing that mrVisitor could support their initiatives, has also helped to promote the site to their members. mrVisitor has also been working with Best Western and Pride of Britain Hotels.

Businesses seeking exposure on the site are invited to complete the free ‘List Your Business’ form found on Information is then sent electronically to mrVisitor’s editorial team who decides whether the entry meets mrVisitor’s ‘criteria of quality’. This criterion simply determines whether or not the submitter’s business will appeal to mrVisitor’s core audience of discriminating professionals in search of high quality, individuality, value, practicality, and adventure.
