Schoolforge-UK, the community of individuals and organisations working to implement Open Content resources in UK education has announced its affiliation with the OSC, the independent voice of the Open Source Community in Europe.

Schoolforge-UK will now drive the OSC's Education Working Group, with the aim of achieving widespread adoption of Open Source solutions in UK education.

According to John Ingleby, Secretary of Schoolforge-UK,
"The primary aim of Schoolforge-UK is 'to bring together individuals and organisations that advocate the use and development of open resources for UK schools and colleges. The OSC ably represents the UK and European Open Source community and it is a natural development to work with them on this common aim.

“ There is a substantive interest in Open Source technology in UK education and this is reflected in the growing number of schools actively using Open Source technology. However, this growth needs professional and independent support and together we can provide this.”

"In the same way that we are affiliated with AFFS, the Education Working Group will include members drawn from both Schoolforge-UK and OSC. This interface will allow us to draw upon the best of both worlds. Ultimately, though the main beneficiaries will be the schools and colleges that we help."

For his part, Mark Taylor Executive Director welcomed Ingleby's comments adding, “Schoolforge-UK is widely respected for its work as a repository. The Open Source community are very keen to help them achieve their goals.”

Other benefits of the affiliation are the sharing of information, and representation to other industry bodies and government organisations.
