With Britain heading for the polls tomorrow, Hitwise data released today showing searches for and usage of the main parties’ websites supports the prediction that the Liberal Democrats are heading for their best election result in over 80 years.

Despite Labour’s last-minute warnings that tactical voting for the Liberal Democrats in marginal seats could increase the likelihood of a Conservative win, Charles Kennedy’s party is still surging ahead in the pre-election polls and online according to Hitwise, global leader in real-time competitive intelligence.

Searches for ‘conservative party’, ‘labour party’ and ‘liberal democrats’, based on data for four weeks ending April 2nd – April 30th
UK Internet users have been searching for the Liberal Democrat’s website in ever increasing numbers, with the past 2 weeks showing a clear lead for searches on “Liberal Democrats” over “Labour Party” and “Conservatives”. For the week ending 30th April, there were 50% more searches on “Liberal Democrats” than on “Labour Party”, and it was also the top search term driving traffic to the Politics category.

With voter turnout a potentially important factor in the outcome of the election, the Conservatives have continued to enjoy a clear lead in the number of online visits to their website. Whilst this trend has been apparent throughout the campaign, the website for the Liberal Democrats (www.libdems.org.uk) was ahead of Labour’s (www.labour.org.uk) between 25th April and 2nd May, although with just one day to go, the Labour website appears to be showing signs of a late surge.
