An EqualLogic iSCSI-based network solution is providing the core infrastructure for digital living services including video-on-demand for households in the Dublin area.

Magnet Networks, which provides customers with digital telephony, digital TV, video-on-demand, broadband internet over IP and a number of other services, required a large, highly available SAN that could support all of its digital media operations, particularly the video-on-demand service it provides with its technology partner, Industria.

The EqualLogic system, provided and installed by EqualLogic’s UK partner, Infrasys Ltd, based in the West Midlands, enables the company to expand the storage without loss of service to customers.

“Magnet Networks is using a 5TB EqualLogic iSCSI SAN to store VoD content, with plans to expand that to 30TB by the end of 2005,” reveals network engineer Boyan Krosnov. “The company also plans to use the array for customer and billing databases,” he adds.

"We are completely happy with the EqualLogic PS200E product. So far it has exceeded our expectations regarding reliability and performance. The clustering and snapshot capability will definitely help us grow fast as our need grow," he continues.

“With a reputation for reliability, high performance, seamless scalability, flexibility and security, we were confident EqualLogic’s PS Series would meet, and surpass, all the company’s needs,” says Infrasys managing director Peter McCormack.

“And the low costs of installation and on-going maintenance makes the system even more attractive to our customers,” he adds.

The IP SAN solution, deployed during January 2005, comprises an EqualLogic PS200E Array, with 5.6TB of storage, supporting servers running Debian Linux.

The EqualLogic SAN uses Magnet’s existing Gbit networks and was so simple to deploy that the company had its Linux Servers up and running within 20 minutes of unboxing the system.

Although the company has a traditional Fibre Channel SAN it was considered too expensive and complex to be considered for the new applications. The EqualLogic system was installed at a fraction of the cost of the equivalent fibre channel – and provides better resilience and scalability.
