AKAMAI CHOSEN BY THE LABOUR PARTY TO IMPROVE WEBSITE PERFORMANCE DURING ELECTION CAMPAIGN

…The Labour Party chooses Akamai to ensure content rich streaming capabilities, improved performance and site availability during the run up to the General Election 2005…

London, United Kingdom, 16 May 2005 - Akamai Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that The Labour Party (www.labour.org.uk) has chosen Akamai’s Media DeliverySM solution to improve site performance and scalability, while delivering a quality, media-rich streaming experience to the end user, and Akamai’s Site Failover solution to help ensure that content can still be delivered and the site remains available regardless of Internet conditions.

In order to handle the peak traffic demands affecting the performance and reliability of the site, improving its scalability and performance was of utmost importance, especially during the run up to the General Election of 2005. The Labour Party wanted to create a dynamic, scalable delivery channel for a range of interactive media, such as video clips of MPs on the campaign trail, so voters could be kept up to date with news and visits to constituencies, interviews and more.

In addition, The Labour Party wanted to take steps to help ensure that content could still be delivered and the user experience would remain stable, in the event of an outage or if an origin server were unavailable. Uniquely, Akamai allows its customers to use its managed service based on consumption rather than having to guess at provisioning enough bandwidth.

Following research into various solutions, The Labour Party selected Akamai’s Media Delivery solution for Web content and streaming delivery capabilities. Akamai Media Delivery provides a solution to the challenges of media delivery by bypassing traditional server and bandwidth limitations, leveraging the capacity of the Akamai EdgePlatform to handle peak traffic conditions and large file sizes with ease. The Labour Party also selected Akamai’s Site Failover solution to ensure that the site remained available to end users regardless of Internet conditions. Web content is delivered from an entire backup version of the site that is stored on Akamai’s Net Storage, which serves to preserve end user satisfaction.

Josh Hendler, Website Infrastructure Engineer, The Labour Party, commented, “Having been involved with campaigns in the US, I was fully aware of the capabilities of Akamai’s solutions. There was a quick turnaround as soon as we signed the agreement with Akamai and although we were not expecting exorbitant traffic volumes, we wanted to ensure that users received the best quality experience possible, which is what Akamai helped us to deliver.”

Traffic figures for Polling Day, Thursday 5th May 2005, resulted in approximately three million hits on The Labour Party website, equating to a 600 percent increase in average traffic levels, with almost half of the traffic viewing streamed content.

Carlos Ramon, Vice President of Sales and General Manager, International, Akamai, said, “The issue of site performance and reliability is a universal one but for an election campaign, it is paramount that voters can access the latest content and at the highest quality, as having a bad user experience could result in a lost vote. The Labour Party has been astute to address the quality issues with its site and now it delivers some of the most sophisticated dynamic content available.”
