PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
23RD MAY 2005

PAINLESS WAY TO PRODUCE PATIENT RECORDS

Health trusts are being offered new software to pull together patient data from different sources using data and content-mining technology.

Hand-written notes, voice recordings, databases and e-mail archives can all be quickly ‘mined’ and the information aggregated to produce a comprehensive record for every patient. The software solution from Datawatch generates easily accessible reports which can be customised and interrogated to meet the individual needs of trusts and managers. An added advantage is that there is no need for expensive system replacements or upgrades, as the solution will integrate smoothly with all existing IT.

Natalie Downes, health sector specialist at Datawatch, says: “The health service is information rich but knowledge poor. Our approach turns that mass of information that resides in multiple systems into a single, easily read document for each patient. Now hospital staff can quickly and easily access a complete record of every patient journey from entry onto the PAS system at admission, through every other stage such as radiology, pathology and the individual treatment areas, as well as operating theatres and the clinical audit system.” Natalie continues: “The form in which the information is stored is irrelevant. One trust recently talked to us about including the digital photos which are taken of all cosmetic surgery patients before and after their operations and stored as jpeg files. This allows them to put together a full case history quickly if the patient subsequently makes a complaint.

“The solution can also pull in records from HR and finance, making it a powerful management tool for chief executives and directors needing information on spending and efficiency. In addition to collating historic data, reports can be designed to track trends over time and to compare actual performance in individual areas against pre-set targets and budgets.” Natalie goes on to say “An extraordinary amount of data in the health service is still kept manually. Our solution allows trusts to work with those archive records, without the need to re-enter information into new electronic systems or databases.”
