The Story

Press Release May 24, 2005

THE rich and famous have known for years that the only way to truly get away from it all is on board their own luxury yacht.

Celebrities from Brigitte Bardot to Madonna have dropped anchor in some of the most luxurious harbours around the world.

But now that lifestyle is becoming increasingly available to the less famous who have always dreamed of owning a yacht but knew the price tag was too high.

Yachting syndicates offer successful people the chance to own a share of a yacht with a select band of like-minded types for a fraction of the cost of a new boat.

One such example is Mark 1 Yachts which is currently recruiting owners for two new 42 luxury high performance yachts.

The boats, made by Sweden Yachts, would normally set you back a minimum of £360,000.

But by joining a syndicate with seven fellow owners, you can enjoy a minimum of 20 weeks’ holiday on your yacht for less than £2,000 a week.

One of the boats will be situated in the Caribbean, initially in Antigua, and the other in the Mediterranean, round the Balearic Islands.

An existing Mark 1 yacht will soon be moving to Sardinia before heading for Mahon, the Canaries and then at the end of the year to St Lucia and the British Virgin Islands.

Each partner has 20 weeks use of either of the two new yachts over five years and can book additional weeks if they wish. The scheme is flexible enough to allow unused weeks to be taken in future years and there are numerous opportunities to sail with other Partners if people have difficulties getting crews together.

While the syndicate is perfect for owners with extensive sailing experience, outside crews can be arranged for those who do not have the necessary sea faring skills but like the idea of owning a share of their own luxury yacht.

There are several financial options available to join the Partnership, either by paying a lump sum together with annual running costs or by spreading the payments over the five years.

Mark 1 Yachts is managed by Mark Matthews, a qualified marine surveyor and a member of the International Institute of Marine Surveyors. He is a qualified Yachtmaster and member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club.

Mark said: “Our syndicates allow people to enjoy the pleasures of owning a boat but without the hassle. The sixteen partners can literally walk on and walk off the boat and enjoy 20 weeks’ luxury holiday for approximately £1,800 a week.

“They have the use of two boats in fantastic summer and winter locations and there is a clearly defined five year scheme with an exit route.

“We are providing successful, professional people with the chance to own a yacht for a fraction of the cost.”

The Mark 1 syndicates have a number of advantages over chartering, including a much higher quality of boat, a very personal service and weekly costs of less than half the cost.

Before anyone joins the syndicate, there is the opportunity to visit the Sweden Yachts boatyard, to test sail one of the boats in the Mediterranean and to talk to members of the existing syndicate about their experiences.
