• Prepaid mobile system centred on Intec’s Singl.eView retail billing solution
• Also includes fully convergent, single mediation platform across voice, mobile and IP networks

London, 25 May 2005: Telecom New Zealand Limited has gone live with a new prepaid mobile billing system based on Singl.eView and Inter-mediatE from Intec, a leading global OSS software vendor for fixed, mobile and next-generation networks. Telecom New Zealand, which has revenues of NZ$5.38bn (GB£2.0bn), provides a full range of Internet, data, voice, mobile and fixed line calling services to customers in New Zealand and Australia. It operates New Zealand's major national telephone network and a nationwide mobile network using CDMA technology, analogue AMPs and digital AMPs.

Telecom New Zealand CIO Mark Ratcliffe said: “This is the first phase of a strategic initiative to replace and consolidate key components of our billing infrastructure. As a result, our ability to compete will increase by being able to rapidly implement new offerings and maximise on customer care promotions.”

The solution for the prepaid mobile system centres on Singl.eView Convergent Billing (CB) and Singl.eView Commerce Engine (CE). Singl.eView CB combines rating and invoice functionality with flexible account reporting and hierarchy management, including flexible tariff, discount and product packaging and consolidation of all products and services used by a customer onto one bill. Singl.eView CE is a real-time authentication, authorisation and accounting module that advises customers how much they will be charged for a service and allows them to see their available balances before they decide to proceed.

Telecom New Zealand has also installed Intec’s Inter-mediatE solution to replace its existing legacy voice mediation platform, and to rationalise its requirements onto one system to support the rollout of new IP-based services. Mediation systems collect, process and validate network traffic information from switches and other systems to facilitate key business processes such as billing and customer care. It was chosen after a detailed examination of the market by Telecom New Zealand, which looked at such factors as convergent functionality, local support capabilities and vendor stability.

Mark Ratcliffe added: “In our mostly recently reported financial period, the New Zealand mobile operation had another very strong quarter with 64,000 net new connections. This increased demand has been achieved through the November 2004 launch of 3rd generation mobile services, high speed mobile broadband, video messaging and Push2Talk. As a result, mobile data revenue is growing by approximately 115 per cent per quarter. To cope with this growth, particularly with prepaid mobile, we have reviewed and updated our back office systems using the Singl.eView retail billing solutions from Intec.”
The achievement of the go-live milestone is the culmination of a three-year project during which Telecom New Zealand is implementing a new Enterprise Architecture across all its Network and Information Technology infrastructure as part of a move to a customer centric ‘Future Mode of Operation’. Within this, an Integrated Billing Programme has been incorporated, with Singl.eView at the centre of the solution.

“New Zealand’s telecommunications market was one of the first to be fully deregulated in the late 1980s and it is now very competitive, with a number of major global players operating in the country,” said Intec CEO Kevin Adams. “This means that Telecom New Zealand has to continually focus on operational efficiency and innovation.”
