Press Release June 3, 2005

LAW FIRMS across the UK are paying more than three times what they need to every time they hire essential support staff.

That is the claim of one consultant practice manager who aims to break that cycle with the launch the UK’s first specialist recruitment agency for legal support staff.

Tom Paul has launched Staff4law after spending a number of years working in practice management for law firms across the country.

But despite his experience, he said recruiting support staff never got any easier because of the lack of a specialist recruitment service.

As far as he was concerned, general office staff agencies were charging excessive fees without delivering the expertise he needed.

Now Mr Paul, 54, hopes to follow the strategy of the phenomenally successful budget airlines such as Ryanair and offer the essential specialist services law firms and legal support staff really want at a fraction of the price of general recruitment agencies.

“This is the first recruitment service of its kind in the UK,” said Mr Paul.

“Unlike other staff agencies, we know the difference between a conveyancing secretary and a litigation secretary.”

But that is not where the difference ends. “This could save law firms thousands of pounds on their recruitment costs,” he added. “Our whole strategy has been driven by the success of the budget airlines like Ryanair.

“We have used our experience running law firms to design a package that gives employers and candidates all the important elements they need, but for a third of the fees charged by conventional employment agencies.”

Staff4law, which was launched in Mr Paul’s native Yorkshire earlier this year, provides a one-stop service matching law firms with the right practice managers, secretaries, receptionists, accounting staff and other specialists.

Through a powerful website – - designed by specialists at Bronco Internet, employers can post new vacancies as they arise as well as browse the details of candidates who promote themselves as they search for new opportunities.

For candidates, the service is free at every stage while law firms only pay for the service after a candidate has been successfully taken on.

If a practice discovers it has made the wrong appointment, it can re-run the service free of any further charge as long as it is in the first month and payment has been made.

Candidates are assured of confidentiality with skills and experience posted anonymously on the website under a reference number.

Once it has matched a candidate with a particular company Staff4law leaves the two sides to arrange interviews and follow the job process through to its conclusion.

Before becoming a consultant practice manager eight years ago, Mr Paul, from Harrogate, worked in senior management positions in the leather tanning industry for 20 years.

He is a member of the choir at Bolton Abbey and a keen motorsport enthusiast.
