NHBC selects CDP to develop mobile solution for

Health & Safety Advisors’ inspections

PDAs and Bluetooth technology replace paper-based inspection reports,

streamlining processes and driving consistency

NHBC selected Creative Database Projects Ltd (CDP) to develop an application to support its mobile workforce of Health and Safety Advisors. This application is now used by NHBC’s Health & Safety Advisors to carry out site safety inspections which follow pre-determined criteria listed on a handheld PDA for evaluating on-site activities. Inspection data is collected via the PDA and synchronised with a central Oracle database using GPRS via a mobile phone and Bluetooth technology. This improves the efficiency of information transfer between office and field-based staff and facilitates expedient dissemination of findings to customers

Using the PDAs, NHBC Advisors input the majority of site safety information by selecting from a list of options on a drop down menu – this ensures information is consistent. Once an inspection is carried out, a printed report detailing the inspection findings is produced using portable colour printers via Infrared or Bluetooth technology. This particular software solution is understood to be the first development of its kind in the UK to be based on an Oracle Lite 10G database residing on a PDA.

According to James Bush, Business Programme Manager at NHBC, “CDP’s proven experience with other clients helped us in our selection process for a development partner for the Heath and Safety mobile solution.

“This project involved a fundamental change to the business processes within our Health & Safety service, moving from manually recording inspection findings to using a PDA with remote connectivity to support this growing area of NHBC’s business. Following the success of this project we have now commenced development of a further mobile solution to support our field-based Building Inspectorate, in partnership with CDP.”

David Gardner, Managing Director of CDP said: “For companies like NHBC being able to collect inspection data consistently and accurately out in the field is vital to their business operations. By applying the right technologies they can provide mobile workers with the right tools to carry out tasks with even greater efficiency.”
