Xyratex Addresses Fibre Channel Requirements of Clustering and Storage Area Network Environments

Mylex Corporation (Nasdaq: MYLX), the world's leading RAID controller vendor in the non-captive network systems marketplace, today announced that Xyratex, a leading server storage systems vendor based in Havant, UK, has signed an OEM agreement for Mylex's Fibre Channel RAID controller technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Xyratex will integrate Mylex's DACFL and DACFF RAID controllers into its new Salient* family of external Fibre Channel server storage systems.

"Mylex is the world's recognised leader in Fibre Channel RAID controllers," said Matthew Cornell, vice president of the Xyratex Storage Systems Division. "We evaluated numerous controllers and determined that in this application Mylex offered our customers the exceptional performance, functionality and manageability they have come to expect from Xyratex."

"Xyratex is a valued Mylex OEM partner and we're pleased they have chosen to incorporate our world-class Fibre Channel technology," said Ron MacLeod, Mylex vice president of sales in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. "This partnership allows Xyratex to introduce a powerful new family of high performance external storage systems which are ideally suited for Storage Area Network (SAN) and clustering environments."

Mylex DACFL Ideal for Xyratex Customers Who are Migrating to Fibre Channel
Xyratex's first fully integrated Fibre Channel RAID systems will incorporate Mylex's DACFL, a RAID controller that provides an Ultra2 SCSI LVD interface to the disk drives and a Fibre Channel interface to the host server. The controller's support of Fibre Channel and Ultra2 SCSI LVD make it ideally suited for Xyratex customers in SCSI environments who are migrating to Fibre Channel.

The DACFL's Fibre Channel interface enables higher bandwidth over greater distances than SCSI, delivering data transfer rates over 100 MB/sec across a 30 metre serial link. The controller's Ultra2 SCSI LVD drive channel connectivity provides data transfer rates of up to 80 MB/sec per channel over a 12 metre parallel SCSI bus.

The DACFL supports up to 60 drives configured into as many as eight LUNs, allowing over two terabytes of scalable high performance capacity per controller.

DACFF Provides Xyratex End-to-End Fibre Channel Connectivity and Performance
Xyratex will incorporate Mylex's new DACFF RAID controller when the controller ships in the second quarter of 1999. The DACFF provides an end-to-end Fibre Channel interface between the host computer and the disk drives, and delivers almost four times the I/O performance of traditional Ultra SCSI controllers.

The DACFF provides drive data transfer rates of up to 100 MB/sec per Fibre Channel loop. This relieves IT professionals from slower and shorter drive channels, enabling greater storage flexibility and performance. The DACFF delivers up to 190 MB/sec performance for sustained sequential RAID 5 reads and over 140 MB/sec performance in sustained sequential RAID 5 writes.

The DACFF supports drive connectivity via four Fibre Channel Loops. Each controller supports up to 500 drives, or over 25 terabytes of scalable high-performance capacity per controller. The DACFF will allow Xyratex customers to deploy enterprise-class SANs supporting hundreds of terabytes of centrally managed storage capacity.

Mylex Controllers Feature Unique Dual Processor Design
The DACFL and the DACFF controllers share a unique dual processor design which separates data movement and control functions. Mylex’s breakthrough architecture delivers unparalleled performance by allowing for one processor to manage overall functions of the controller, while the second processor manages Mylex’s hardware XOR engine and on board memory.
