World renowned explorer, author and film maker Benedict Allen will talk at this year’s Gap Year Show, which is taking place at the Wembley Exhibition Centre, London on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 June. After opening the show at 10.30 AM on Tuesday and extolling to the audience the benefits of taking a gap year, Benedict will be available for book signings at the Trekforce Expeditions stand (No B12a).

Benedict Allen is one of Britain’s most well known explorers. In recent years he has pioneered the filming of expeditions without the aid of a film crew, thereby allowing viewers to witness the harsh reality of solo journeys. He has published nine books, two of which have been bestsellers, and his travels through some of the remotest places on earth have formed the basis for five separate BBC TV series.

Benedict’s expeditions over the years have spanned some of the most inhospitable regions of the world. His career highlights include a five and a half month journey across Mongolia, a solo traverse of Namibia’s 1000-mile Skeleton Coast and a 3600-mile crossing of the Amazon Basin. His recent exploits have seen him visit the shamen and witchdoctors of Haiti, Indonesia and Mexico as part of his TV series Last of the Medicine Men, as well as completing a 1000-mile dog sled expedition through the heart of Siberia, during the region’s worst winter in living memory.

The GapYear Show is a new event aimed at school leavers, University graduates and those interested in taking a career break. The two-day show features a series of seminars and presentations, focusing on various aspects of taking a gap year. Topics to be covered vary from finding work placements and travelling safely overseas to suitable clothing and equipment and gaining qualifications. Experts will be on hand throughout the show to answer questions, whilst over 50 different companies will be providing information on the latest gap year opportunities.

Benedict Allen will be available throughout the first day of the GapYear Show to answer questions about his exploits. He will also be signing copies of his books and can be found at the Trekforce Expeditions stand.

Trekforce Expeditions ( is a UK-based charity, established in 1990, that specialises in jungle expeditions to Central and South America and South East Asia. The project-based conservation expeditions can be combined with other phases, such as learning Spanish, teaching in rural communities, trekking, adventure and diving. These programmes are ideal for anybody looking to escape for anything from four weeks to five months, especially as part of a year out from education or work.

With extensive experience of life in the rainforests of Borneo and the Amazon, Benedict is a keen advocate of jungle expeditions. As such he has recently agreed to act as an ambassador for Trekforce’s operations overseas.
