First of its kind expedition uses visual planning software to ensure safety of team members

Mindjet, the leading provider of software for visualising and managing information, today announced that the Ice Warrior Project has chosen MindManager to help it set three world records. The brainstorming and planning software is being used to plan the logistics of taking a team to all four North Poles, including critical contingency planning around crisis events during this extreme test of human endurance.

The Ice Warrior Four Poles Expedition, which is scheduled to start in February 2006 and will last approximately 120 days, will see the Ice Warrior team attempt to reach all four North Poles in one season while setting three world records. The team, who will face extremely treacherous terrain and sub zero temperatures, aim to reach the Magnetic North Pole, the Arctic Pole, the Geographic North Pole as well as the Geomagnetic North Pole. If they succeed in reaching the Arctic Pole, the team will become the first group in history to reach the centre of the Arctic Ocean.

MindManager’s visual information mapping tool provides an intuitive visual interface that rapidly captures, organises, and shares information into intuitive data maps. The Ice Warrior project team are using MindManager X5 Pro to plan the expedition logistics and all possible contingencies, including route plans, emergency scenarios and evacuations.

“No-one has ever managed to reach the Artic Pole – let alone attempted to reach all four poles in a single expedition – and the logistics are enormously complicated,” said Jim McNeill, Founder and Leader of the Ice Warrior Project. “Safety for our team is the number one priority. MindManager enables us to plan the best response to every possible emergency situation we could potentially encounter on the expedition. These are life and death situations, and only by ensuring we have all bases covered can we make sure each team member is safe.”

MindManager’s most critical use is contingency planning for potential crises events the expedition team might encounter while on the trip. It enables the project team to brainstorm different event scenarios and work out the actions and communication needed to sort out each scenario, and in doing so, rescue the team from a life-threatening situation.

MindManager is also used to plan all the trip logistics. The project team can view all aspects of their expedition in a single map, ensuring they have a strategic view and no logistical aspects are accidentally omitted. It assists in the responsibilities and tasks to be assigned and acted upon for all aspects of the expedition, ensuring efficient planning and delivery of the project whilst working collaboratively together.

MindManager is also used to manage the expedition budget. The project team uses it to compile the various sponsorships received and manage how the different facets of marketing can be used to support each sponsor. The software allows the team to develop their own visually intuitive data maps to work out the best possible return on investment and benefit for each of the sponsors.

“Brainstorming and planning are both critical items to events such as the worlds first four poles expedition to be undertaken by the Ice Warrior team,” said Dustin Newport, Managing Director for Mindjet UK. “Enabling teams to plan for different scenarios in a visual manner, whether it be in the boardroom or out in the arctic, allows them to be better prepared and more successful in their ambitions.”

Aside from the planning of the trip, MindManager is used plan the structure of motivational speaking sessions. McNeill explains, “When I am not planning the logistics of the expedition, I use MindManager on my PDA to help me plan my motivational speaking seminars. The software lets me plan the structure of my seminars and allows me to bring a customised message from the arctic into the boardroom.”
