Multi-Tech, a leading data communications company, announces the launch of its MultiVOIP range of gateway products for voice and fax traffic over IP based networks (VOIP). Unlike other gateway products on the market, the MultiVOIP does not contain its own proprietary router. This has the advantage that companies can run VOIP across existing Wide Area Network routers rather than having to replace them. This capability enables resellers to offer companies VOIP communications using the Internet or an existing routed WAN (i.e. intranet), significantly reducing or in some cases entirely removing the cost of international calls.

The MultiVOIP products are inexpensive stand alone units designed to connect headquarters and remote offices telephone switchboard systems (PBXs), key telephones, or stand alone telephones using the Internet and/ or an existing WAN infrastructure. MultiVOIP can be used with any WAN router.

Installation could not be easier, requiring no additional infrastructure, hardware or software products. The MultiVOIP is typically installed between a company's PBX or telephones and an IP router on an Ethernet LAN. Any authorised user may access the unit by dialling its extension number on their telephone. On receipt of a dial tone from the unit, any other MultiVOIP unit connected to the Internet/intranet can be called.

The MultiVOIP can also connect a standard PSTN line to the Internet/intranet so that long distance calls can be handled by the MultiVOIP.

"There is no doubt that Voice over IP is a major emerging technology," commented Dilip Mistry, managing director of Multi-Tech UK. "Our approach allows resellers to offer an inexpensive route to significant savings without disruption to existing telephone or Internet services. Multi-Tech itself installed MultiVOIP units between its HQ in Minneapolis and labs in India - saving $10,000 a month in call charges. We believe we are first to market with this type of product."

Connection to a PBX Trunk, PBX extensions or stand alone telephones is made using E&M, FXO or FXS interfaces with standard RJ-11 or RJ-45 connectors. Connection to the Ethernet LAN is made via 10Base-T with RJ-45 connector.

Pricing and Availability:
MultiVOIP - MVP200 (2 voice / fax ports) is available now, priced at £1,199.
MultiVOIP - MVP3000 (4-8 voice / fax ports) is available end Q1’99.
