It’s official…the nation’s favourite “good mood” foods are fresh fruit, sandwiches and roast dinners! The research, commissioned by the SUBWAY® chain, that makes the world’s most famous sandwich – the SUB®, asked over 1,000 people what food they eat when they were feeling happy or positive. The top ten “good mood” foods were as follows:
1) Fresh fruit (72% of respondents)
2) Favourite sandwich (60%)
3) Roast dinners (59%)
4) Salad (56%)
5) Biscuits and chocolate (46%)
6) Takeaways (46%)
7) Fish dishes (40%)
8) Crisps and savoury snacks (35%)
9) Baked Beans on toast (30%)
10) Sausage and mash (28%)
The research highlighted there are clear differences in the types of food people eat depending on the mood they are in. While 72% of people opt for fruit when they’re feeling happy, only 52% turn to the fruit bowl when they feel down. Similarly, almost twice as many happy people opt for salad (56%) compared with unhappy people (29%). Roast dinners are the choice of 59% of happy people but just 38% of fed-up people. And when it comes to lunchtime or a snack, positive people are more likely to indulge in their favourite sandwich (60%) than those who are miserable (42%).
In contrast, people who feel unhappy are far more likely to grab a bar of chocolate or handful of biscuits, with 57% opting for this favourite comfort food compared with just 46% of happy people.
Meanwhile, the research also highlighted there are clear eating differences between men and women – depending on the mood they are in. When feeling positive or happy, women are 14% more likely to eat salads (63% of women and 49% of men) and 10% more likely to eat fruit (77% of women and 67% of men). But when they feel fed-up or down, women are 11% more likely to eat chocolate and biscuits (62% of women and 51% of men) and 5% more likely to eat crisps and savoury snacks (42% of women and 37% of men). Interestingly, sandwiches showed the least differences between men and women – no matter what mood they are in.
Juliette Kellow, the SUBWAY® chain’s ‘Mood nutritionist’, comments: “This research shows there is a clear link between mood and the food people eat. People appear to be far more likely to opt for healthier food choices when they feel positive and happy, but choose less healthy foods when they’re down. These differences are even more apparent in women.
“What most people don’t realise is that what you eat can actually boost your mood. The key is to increase levels of serotonin in the brain. This ‘feel-good chemical’ affects the part of the brain that regulates mood, so boosting levels means people are less likely to feel under-the-weather, miserable, depressed and suffer from the Winter blues.”
Boosting serotonin levels is as easy as eating more healthy carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread and cereals, porridge, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, fruit and veg. Meanwhile, foods rich in tryptophan (a building block for protein) such as beef, chicken, turkey, tuna and cheese, can also increase serotonin levels in the brain.
Juliette says: “It’s interesting that the foods people choose when they are feeling happy are the very ones that are likely to boost their mood further. So how is the nation feeling as we go into 2006?
Well…contrary to popular belief, people are generally in a good mood following Christmas and New Year – with over 66% saying that they felt positive, happy or hopeful and only 13% saying they were fed-up or depressed. 13% of people said they were feeling skint or broke. Comments Juliette: “That’s great news because it means people will hopefully be opting for healthier meals and snacks. And for the minority who are feeling fed up after Christmas, beating the Winter blues can be helped by eating more positive mood foods.”
