London, 23 January 2006 - EMBARGOED UNTIL 7:30AM GMT

Lord Birt, former Director-General of the BBC and - until last month - the Prime Minister’s Strategy Adviser, has been appointed adviser to the Board of Directors of Capgemini UK plc, the UK arm of one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. Lord Birt will advise the UK board on strategic issues, especially with regard to its efforts in the Public Sector, as well as focus on supporting Capgemini’s Telecom, Media & Entertainment practice in the UK and across Europe.

Lord Birt’s appointment has been approved, as required by Ministerial Code, by Cabinet Secretary Gus O’Donnell, acting on advice from the Independent Committee on Business Appointments. Following the Committee’s recommendation, Lord Birt’s Public Sector work for Capgemini will start in five month’s time (six months after he left office).

Lord Birt has been the Prime Minister’s Strategy Advisor since leaving the BBC in 2000 and a member of the Cabinet Office strategy board since 2003. He has also held a number of posts in the private sector, including Chairman of Lynx Capital Ventures 2000-2004; and he is an independent director of eBay’s PayPal Europe subsidiary.

Mark Porter, CEO of Capgemini UK plc, said: "Lord Birt’s top-level experience will be of immense value to a business such as ours in which quality and originality of thinking are key to commercial success. His strategic insights and leadership skills will be of great value to our clients facing the challenges of transformation – challenges which he has faced in many contexts and at the highest levels."

Didier Bonnet, Managing Director of Capgemini’s Global Telecom, Media & Entertainment Sector, added: “At a time when the telecom and media industries are converging, Lord Birt’s experience of positioning the BBC successfully for the digital era, and his visionary insights about the continuing impact of new technology, will be invaluable to our clients.”

Lord Birt has spent most of his career to date in broadcasting, rising through the ranks to positions of increasing responsibility. As Director-General of the BBC, his reforms are widely credited with having saved the organisation from the threat of privatisation, strengthened its news and current affairs, and prepared it for the Internet.
