Morris Care, based in Shropshire, is to become one of a number of care providers in the country to participate in the Gold Standards Framework for Care Homes pilot scheme. The initiative, developed by the NHS, is aimed at helping to improve the quality of care for patients nearing the end of their lives.

Whether an individual is in the final stages of life due to heart failure, dementia, or simply frailty from old age, they deserve to be given the best care possible. With latest figures from the NHS suggesting that 20% of the UK population dies in care homes, optimising care in this area has to be a key priority for those in health care.

Radbrook Nursing Home and The Care Centre in Shropshire, two of the homes owned and run by Morris Care, have signed up to take part in the scheme which is to run from June 2006 until February 2007.

The programme endeavours to improve residents’ ‘end of life’ care through the training of care staff in the best practices involved in looking after those in the final stages of life. The scheme involves helping care homes to improve their proactive support (for example, in prescribing), developing clarity of procedures and enhancing communication between care homes and local GPs. All elements of the scheme aim to provide care staff with a greater understanding of individuals’ needs and to enable them to share this information with residents’ families.

Sue Humphries, Chief Executive of Morris Care, commented “We are very proud to be a part of this scheme which will greatly benefit those in need of particular care and attention during their final moments. Not only will the programme enable our staff to have greater awareness of the needs of our most fragile residents, but we hope we will be able to share our experiences with others striving to provide the highest quality ‘end of life’ care.”
