Style & power. Everything for today's mobile computing requirements
26th February 1999
Having already established themselves as a leading supplier of Notebook PCs
Sony is set to further enhance its market share by introducing the VAIO F100 series. The F100 series includes two new high performance VAIO Notebooks which will be available in March 1999. Based on the Sony VAIO style, the two new models offer the power and performance for all of today's mobile computing requirements - with a style that only Sony can offer.
The two new models, the PCG F190 and the PCG F160, both feature Intel Pentium II processors, 64Mb RAM, and a stunning 14.1" TFT LCD capable of displaying resolutions of up to 1024 x 768. Top of the range is the PCG F190 which offers a 366Mhz processor, a massive 6.4Gb hard drive with Sony's latest DVD ROM drive incorporated as standard. The PCG F160 provides a 300Mhz processor, 4.3Gb hard drive and a 24 speed CD - ROM. Combine these powerful specifications with the unique VAIO World concept of integrating video and audio technology and incorporate Sony's high speed i.LINK interface, and the new range is unequalled in today's mobile computing market.
More Software - more uses - more productivity
Both the PCG F160 and the PCG F190 include a host of pre-installed software including Sony DVGate Still, a still image capture software; Sony PictureGear, an image archiving software enabling users to create their own screensavers, wallpapers, html photo albums or even produce 360° panorama shots; Sony Media Bar for audio/video playback; and Sony MD Editor, MiniDisc editing software.
After having connected an MD deck and a CD player to the Notebooks via the optional Control A1 kit, MD Editor allows users to record titles directly from CD onto MiniDisc via drag & drop. Additionally users can edit a pre-recorded MiniDisc by combining, moving, erasing or dividing tracks. The PCG F-190 additionally includes Sony DVGate Motion video capture software, Adobe Premier LE digital video editing software, DVD Express - DVD playback software. Windows 98 is installed in both the F160 and the F190.
Wherever you are - you are never out of touch
PC Card slots for card bus support make the new VAIO Notebook PC's truly mobile multimedia ready. These slots also host the supplied 4-in-1 PC card modem for easy access to the Internet, fax and e-mail communication. This PC card is capable of up to 56 kbps modem transfer rates and 14.4 kbps fax rates, and with the optional kits can be used for Ethernet, ISDN and Sony GSM data connectivity too.
The VAIO World
The VAIO World concept of AV/IT integration is well-served by these two new models. The most important gate to VAIO World is of course the digital i.LINK port integrated in the Notebooks for the connection of digital AV equipment. i.LINK (IEEE 1394) is an industry-standard, high-speed interface for sending and receiving digital audio and video content or data at speeds up to 200 Mbps without loss of quality.
Debbie Arnold, Marketing Communications Manager for Sony ITG said "we are now able to provide the market with the most advanced technology in portable computing. The VAIO F100 series boasts impressive desktop power on the move, a display that is larger than a desktop 15" CRT display and it allows the user to communicate freely with remote locations".
Making life easier
Both new models feature three user-friendly 'P buttons', Programmable Power Keys with 12 different programming options, which enable users to access any application at the push of a button, e. g. start their email program or launch their organiser. In addition both models incorporate McAfee's Virus Scan providing reliable virus protection. A Dual Screen mode allows users to connect to an external monitor and work on the two screens side by side.

The VAIO PCG F160 has a Suggested Retail Price of £1619, exclusive of VAT and the VAIO PCG F190 has a Suggested Retail Price of £2559, exclusive of VAT. Both models will be available March 1999 and carry a fully comprehensive one-year warranty.
The Success of the Sony VAIO range

Even more impressive is that Sony has become the 5th largest supplier of Notebook PC's in the UK.
Debbie Arnold added "The VAIO range has been a huge success for Sony and the new VAIO F100 series will help our continued expansion into all sectors of the market and enable us to grow our market share even more rapidly".
