Birmingham, Leeds, and Sheffield Universities to Implement Portal and Web Content Management Solutions
LONDON, UK, — June 1, 2006 — SunGard Higher Education (www.sungardhe.com) announced today that the University of Birmingham, the University of Leeds, and the University of Sheffield have each licensed the Luminis product family, a standards-based portal and Web content management solution. The three Russell Group universities are implementing Luminis product family technologies to launch digital campus Web sites and portals that will help provide constituents both increased and more personalised access to university services and resources.
The University of Birmingham has expanded its Unified Digital Campus to include the Luminis Content Management Suite. The University implemented its portal using the Luminis Platform in August 2004 to provide its students with a collaborative portal platform, thereby helping further the institution’s aspirations for creating a Unified Digital Campus. Deployment of the Luminis Content Management Suite (CMS) will help the University’s academic and business units to create, manage, deliver and archive its Web content, using the scalable and flexible platform delivered by SunGard Higher Education and incorporating EMC Documentum technologies. Luminis CMS will help enable a wide range of non-technical users across the University to contribute content with built-in workflows that help ensure the necessary approvals before publication. The University expects to accelerate time-to-Web for publishing to both its portal and external websites (www.portalproject.bham.ac.uk).
The University of Leeds has licensed the Luminis Premier package to provide highly personalised information, Web services, and community interaction for University constituents. Luminis Premier affords the University the opportunity to build an institutional portal and manage the content within. Together, the Luminis Premier technologies will help provide a seamless online environment to help support university life. The portal will help enable the further alignment of infrastructure with the strategic goals of the institution, by linking together people, systems and communities, as well as helping the alignment of IT systems with academic and administrative processes (myuni.leeds.ac.uk).
The University of Sheffield is replacing its Novell Portal Services with the Luminis Platform. The University sought an open standards-based portal solution that could integrate with its current information technology investments. The Luminis Platform leverages JA-SIG uPortal technologies, helping the University to collaborate and co-develop portal channels with a wider range of universities in the UK and beyond.
“Demand for a Unified Digital Campus that provides anytime, anywhere access to student, faculty, and administrative information and services is becoming ubiquitous in UK higher education," noted Chris Howgego, Senior Vice President, International, SunGard Higher Education. "Universities are looking for both enterprise class and standards-based technology solutions that meet core, strategic needs. We have spent the past several years carefully aligning our technology strategy to meet these same demands, and we are pleased to see the universities of Birmingham, Leeds, and Sheffield selecting SunGard Higher Education."
