Over 6 million people in the UK are looking for love online and an astonishing 71% of them are happy to admit it – according to a new survey carried out by a leading internet dating website that is genuinely free to use.

The survey of over 3,100 FreeDating members revealed that the stigma behind Internet dating is officially a thing of the past. With working hours increasing and the chances of getting out to meet people diminishing, it’s not surprising that Internet dating is experiencing a boom in popularity, with millions turning to the mouse to find their soul mates. Female users are leading the revolution in breaking the old stigmas, as 83% are happy to admit using this twentieth century method of bagging a potential partner.

74% of the women polled are comfortable chatting to their best friends about their online dating experiences, with a further two thirds of respondents happy to discuss things in the office with colleagues and at home with their mums.

The men, it seems, are not so sure. 84% of them wouldn’t admit to their mums that they are using online methods to meet a potential daughter in law. Over three quarters of the male respondents would, however, be prepared to tell their best friends or work mates about their online experiences.

Lee Kennedy, from Birmingham met her current boyfriend on and she comments:

“With so many of my friends Internet dating, I didn't have a second thought about hopping online to find a partner. I'd been single for a while and was finding it hard to meet men in a bar or club, so online was the natural choice for me. I met Alex almost straight away and we spent hours talking everyday and I felt very quickly I'd like to meet him. I discussed everything with my family and friends and was never embarrassed that I resorted to online dating as everyone else is doing it. Now Alex and I are discussing moving in with each other after Christmas and I've never been so happy."
