8 August 2006, Oxford: Avril Lethbridge and George Locke, two of Oxford’s senior citizens, have just launched an Internet magazine – Panderjam - aimed specifically at the older generation.

Avril comments – “George and I got the idea for Panderjam as a result of wanting to get easy access to information relevant to our generation, such as gardening tips, travel and arts. We then got the idea of developing an on-line magazine where visitors could not only browse the information they were looking for, but also make their own contribution.

Above all we wanted to make it informative and thought provoking, but most of all fun and different”.

The site is ‘different’ in many ways, but most importantly in its stylish presentation. The site is wonderfully illustrated by George, an ex pilot. Each page has its own watercolour illustration reminding us of a more innocent time. The presentation has a coffee shop feel to it, you are enticed to pull up a chair and dip in……

Avril again “We hope that you feel amongst friends – we are even including a Sunday Newsletter which will pop into your email box. We know that Sunday mornings can be a lonely time, hopefully those that register – and its all for free - will look forward to receiving their Sunday post”.

Panderjam offers a wide range of topics to entertain and inform including, a Potting shed, Books and Poetry, Travel and Advice from the Scarlet Woman! Other places to visit include a Coffee Shop where you can pull up a chair and have a ‘chat’ and the Features section where all contributions are welcome.

The fact that Avril and George are well into their seventies is an encouragement to all and reinforces the fact that you are never too old.

George notes – “Our plan is to serve Oxford and all the surrounding areas and in time, through the success of the site, become nationwide – we already have contributions from across the country, and from around the World. This is your site, do drop in, take a look and most importantly tell us what you think – there is a message board ‘in the Coffee Shop’.

As Avril quotes – “You don't stop doing things because you are old. You get old because you stop doing things..........'

And if you are wondering where the name came from, just click on and go to poetry and listen!

Notes to Editors

Avril Lethbridge trained at the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art. She has a wide ranging career in all aspects of theatre, events, visitor attractions and private parties, including writing, producing and directing events such as the JCB performance which attracted much media attention, a major Son et Lumiere production at Oriel College, Oxford and Time and the Thames at both Shiplake and Windsor.

George Locke joined the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1942 aged 13, and subsequently went to sea in 1946. After the war George started flying training, and subsequently became a test pilot, combining this work with being Chief Engineering officer at a Naval helicopter base, latterly flying 16 different helicopters and 19 fixed wing aircraft.

George and Avril both lost their partners around the same time, and so, finding themselves on their own, the idea of Panderjam was born.
