Bristol UK, 14th September 2006 - Symmetry, a leading supplier of financial software has won a contract to supply West Kent College with a new accounting system, following the Tonbridge-based College’s decision to review all of its internal management systems to improve financial reporting. Symmetry’s Financials 9.0 software will initially support 50 users.

Commenting on the decision to upgrade, Terry Coleing, Assistant Principal for Finance & Funding at West Kent College said, β€œI discovered Symmetry whilst at Epping Forest College. Word gets around in the educational sector as to who’s using what technology, and we tend to base our decisions on colleagues’ recommendations. A key reason for selecting Symmetry at West Kent College was to improve our financial reporting and budgetary management. With Symmetry’s extensive reporting capabilities we can produce key management information and bespoke reports for projects, such as our capital budget programmes for spending on new College facilities.”

He continued, β€œThese reports help in decision-making and also enable us to track spending more efficiently to determine early on whether we’re going over or under budget. If we identify we’re coming in under budget, then we can re-allocate monies to other areas of the College for curriculum delivery or new teaching programmes. Previously it was very difficult for us to accurately track spending in these sorts of situations”.

He added β€œThe Symmetry system has also given us better control over College data in areas like payment handling, student invoices and purchase order commitment, helping these to become more seamless, by reducing paperwork and streamlining authorisation”.

Using Symmetry, West Kent College can also attach codes to budgets for various projects in progress, helping to maximise control over expenditure. The college is constantly striving to improve its facilities and teaching programmes to attract new students, so it is vital they spend any funding they receive wisely.

In the future the college plans to make some of its financial reports available on its intranet, so that authorised users can access information more readily. The college is also in the process of setting up an Extranet and they will eventually place all of their financial information on here, so that outside bodies such as governors can access it remotely.

West Kent College is also at the early development stages of a new campus with an investment of Β£64 million. Once the new space is finalised, the college plans to change the way it stores information; by operating a financial system with data integrity, clarity of information and a clear audit trial, West Kent College hopes to create a paperless environment and the new Symmetry system will help them achieve this.
