- SAM Pains Removed By First Ever Smartsourced Managed Service

- Can either use client’s own SAM software or free Liken License Management Toolkit

For the first time, Software Asset Management (SAM) is available as a fully hosted, managed service delivered to service level guarantees on an ongoing basis. Liken Group, SAM specialists in the fields of Risk Management, Compliance and Optimisation, has launched the first external service for CIOs who understand the limitations of running Software Asset Management systems internally. The new system is aimed at removing the operational pains of corporate Software Asset Management and reducing costs too.

Until now, normal practise included buying a SAM tool and implementing it internally. However, with the constant pressures on internal resources this is often difficult to implement well. In addition, SAM tools cannot read a software license, and automatic identification alone cannot keep pace with all of the software updates on the market.

Using the client’s own software or Liken’s free e-link license management toolkit, data is gathered, at regular intervals from across the client’s network, in accordance with predefined client parameters. The data is then sent via secure FTP or HTTP to Liken’s servers to check that executable files are accurately reconciled.

Whilst this initial data is being processed, Liken experts review the client’s internal controls and procedures for purchasing and storing software. At the same time a complete independent risk assessment is compiled identifying file-sharing software, outdated versions and any other installed software that impacts the security of the network.

Knowing what is installed, does not mean that the network is compliant. Therefore, Liken compiles a detailed compliance report of the client’s current position. This adheres to the most demanding best practice standards including ISO/IECs: 19770, 17799 and 27001 and ITIL standards. Liken support and work closely with organisations such as FAST and the Business Software Alliance.

Commenting on the opportunity for the new service James Rowlands, Director of Liken says; " ...how many organisations really do a good job here? They commit to meeting compliance standards and invest in a SAM tool only to find that it is often a far more onerous task than they initially thought. Worse still, many now see compliance as a control burden rather than as an opportunity.

"The main problem is that the market is predominantly focussed on the implementation of SAM tools. But that is only part of the story. Tools cannot read a license and often do not keep up to date with all the changes required. People need to get involved and that's when, traditionally, things have come unstuck, often as a result of internal resource issues. Now, for the first time this can be 'smartsourced' to experts who take than pain away, reduce the costs involved and leave the client with the confidence that their system is running legally, risk free and is fully optimised."

About Liken
As an independent group, Liken provide impartial and effective advice and reports covering a range of essential areas - risk reporting, license optimisation, software usage and entitlement that allow their clients to make the right management decisions rather than being managed by the limitations of their SAM toolset.
Liken delivers effective software asset management itself - not just a set of tools or a few days consultancy. The service they provide overcomes all the stumbling blocks and pressure points usually encountered by businesses implementing a software asset management program including:
-File reconciliation: Liken guarantee to reconcile at least 95% of all executable files on client’s networks and tell them exactly which applications are fully or partially installed, and…
- License reconciliation: Liken establishes exactly what their clients are entitled to, based upon what supporting documentation is available - all on a fixed cost basis.
