Did you know? Heart attacks are more common on New Year’s Day than any other time of year. This ‘holiday’ phenomenon is well documented in both the UK and the US, although the cause is not fully understood. Even when taking expected winter deaths into account, 5% more cardiac deaths occur during the holiday period than expected from seasonal effects alone.

Suggested causes for the New Year spike in heart deaths include overeating, excessive use of salt and alcohol, delay in seeking medical help, and reduced staffing of healthcare services. Another strong contender is stress. The festive season is one of the most stressful times of the year. As well as all the planning of gifts, meals and entertainment, there are financial pressures and stresses from travel and interacting with relatives you prefer not to encounter.

Stress is now emerging as a major risk factor for heart attack, especially in younger adults. Stress constricts arteries and increases blood pressure, which in itself is a risk factor for heart attack. Optimal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg, and each 20mmHg increase above this can double the risk of dying from coronary heart disease. British Hypertension Society guidelines recommend that drug treatment is considered once blood pressure reaches 140/90mmHg or above.

So, why not make it a healthy start to the New Year – get your loved ones a home blood pressure monitor. The new A&D UA 767+ Digital Blood Pressure Monitor is validated by the British Hypertension Society (BHS) as clinically accurate, and is widely used in hospitals. It inflates automatically, at the touch of a single button, and has a large, easy-to-read display which shows at a glance whether your blood pressure is normal, hypertensive or in-between.
