Altarum Institute Enforces Policies and Blocks Malicious Traffic with ForeScout’s Award-Winning NAC Appliance
Cupertino, Calif. — May 8, 2007 — ForeScout Technologies, a leading provider of clientless network access control (NAC) for Fortune 500 enterprises and government organisations, today announced that Altarum Institute, a nonprofit health systems research institute headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan has selected its CounterACT appliance as its network access control solution. CounterACT was chosen over NAC solutions from Cisco, Lockdown and Mirage.
The organisation’s first priority was that the solution had to be clientless. In addition, management simplicity was important since there would be a small staff responsible for administering the solution. Finally, a solution with low false positives for pre- and post-connect threat detection would be looked at most favourably.
“After we evaluated CounterACT, the search pretty much ended since this product had literally everything we wanted and so much more than we even realised we wanted or needed,” said Al Wendt, network manager for Altarum. “With it, you get three mature products in one – NAC, malicious traffic detection, and vulnerability assessment.”
Wendt continues, “While it’s not against policy for employees to bring in personal laptops, it does pose a threat, and the same goes for contractors. CounterACT eliminates those threats. Even more serious are threats posed by zero-day viruses and worms. With CounterACT’s behavioural detection method, our risk is pretty much removed. And in the future, we’ll have every user authenticate against Windows Active Directory for more control over who’s allowed on the network. CounterACT makes this extremely simple to implement and gives us great flexibility.”
“NAC is a critical technology for properly securing who has access to the network and ensuring that the device they are using will not damage the network,” said Gord Boyce, global vice president of sales and marketing for ForeScout. “CounterACT provides the required protection by combining clientless NAC and policy enforcement with built-in signature-less intrusion prevention. Additionally, the flexibility of the CounterACT platform allows forward-thinking organisations like Altarum Institute to rollout appropriate NAC functionality to address current and future network security concerns.”
