London, UK (2nd August 2007) July saw spam levels creep up again, accounting for 91.52% of all email scanned by SoftScan during July. Despite the recently highlighted change in tactics by spammers to use pdf and excel files to hide their messages, SoftScan attributes the rise to less legitimate business email as July is a period when many people are on holiday, rather than an increase in spam.

“Around this time of year we always see an increase in spam. However, further investigation of the data shows that it has not increased in real terms, but that legitimate email has decreased,” comments Diego d’Ambra, CTO of SoftScan. “But spammers changing tactics around this time of year is bad news for businesses that don’t have adequate protection. Spam that was once stopped before it reached those users’ inbox is now getting through, leaving the holidaymaker returning to not just a full work load, but an inbox full of junk mail too.”

For organisations interested in discovering just how much time and money is lost in productivity issues when dealing with spam, SoftScan has introduced a calculator that will allow a company to work out how much time per employee is lost to spam each week and the overall company total for the year. The calculation is determined from data received once the organisation has trialled SoftScan, free of charge, for two weeks.

Virus levels dropped again from 0.61% to 0.39% of all email scanned during July. Phishing style viruses are also down from last month. However, since many viruses are distributed in waves of attacks, this lower figure is probably due to a dip in activity, not that the overall tactic of phishing has changed.

The top five virus families in July 07 were:

1 – phishing: 88.79%
2 – downloader: 5.86%
3 – netsky: 1.67%
4 – agent: 1.04%
5 – mytob: 0.89%
