Babies and toddlers are set to outshine their parents in their familiarity of other languages with the launch of babyboomboom® – a multi-lingual musical CD of well-known and traditional nursery rhymes sung in English and a second language – currently Spanish or French.

babyboomboom CDs, priced only £9.99 each and available at babyboomboom, have been developed by busy working mums for children aged 0-5 years of age. The CDs play well-known and traditional nursery rhymes and songs in English, with each verse repeated in a second language. Designed to meet the growing demand for modern language introduction to young children at home and in pre-school environments, babyboomboom is a fun, participative way for parents and carers to familiarise babies and toddlers with the sounds of other languages.

From birth we pick up all the necessary sounds needed to begin to form language, as children who grow up in bi-lingual families clearly demonstrate. As all good nurseries and playgroups know, an effective and fun way to acquire the sounds needed for language familiarisation is by hearing and repeating rhymes and songs. Toddlers pick up simple sounds and repeat them and, in time, become familiar with the sounds of a language. Now with a potential head-start in our modern multi-lingual world, babyboomboom children also have a lot of fun.

The founding directors of the company are careful to explain that babyboomboom CDs are not a language course, but a fun way for young children and their parents and carers to become familiar with the sounds of other languages. The participative, shared experience of repeating rhymes and songs together encourages and stimulates young minds; “Our little ones also love to dance along to babyboomboom and now switch easily from a song in one language to a song in another,” says co-founder Juliet Machan.

Juliet knows that familiarity is very important for parents too, and translating the songs she knew when she was young is a fun way to introduce the sounds and ideas of other languages for her child. It is also terrific fun to share the experience, “it has benefited me too. Now, after several plays of babyboomboom, I can not only speak some French and Spanish but can sing it too – if singing is the right term! I am sure many parents would relish the same advantage – stimulating toddlers and helping them to become familiar with another language at the same time.”

All the songs are original recordings made by professional musicians and played on acoustic instruments. babyboomboom believes strongly in active participation and are planning to launch a new range that include musical instruments designed for small hands so that toddlers can accompany the songs. babyboomboom is also beginning to work with play-schemes and children’s groups and welcomes any input from nursery and playgroup leaders.

Come and meet the babyboomboom team at The Baby Show, Earls Court, 19-21 October, 2007, on stand F36.
