Equiinet, the specialist in eLearning content delivery and eSafety for schools, has announced that it has teamed up with Synergy Learning to develop MoodlePilot: a focused learning platform for course management and content distribution.
Based on Equiinet’s leading hardware/software delivery platform, and endorsed by Moodle, MoodlePilot is a secure, high performance and turnkey solution with plug-ins and other complementary software pre-loaded. It combines the Moodle course management environment and content distribution system, which offers twice the flexibility and capability of other solutions. Large quantities of content from many different content suppliers, such as Espresso Education, Pearson Education etc, can sit along side and be used by Moodle courses directly. Additional flexibility is provided through the appliance being sited within schools, so that – unlike centralised solutions – the internet does not need to be constantly available via high throughput broadband.
According to Roy Kerley, Director at Synergy Learning, the partnership with Equiinet will be of great advantage to schools that want to use Moodle:
“Moodle’s reputation is well known. Added to this the combination of Equiinet’s ability to provide field proven hardware/software appliances, and Synergy Learning’s track record of ability to deliver a portfolio of tailored support services, makes for a great partnership to provide tools that schools actually need and can deploy without concern.”
Moodle’s creator, Martin Dougiamas, has commented that he looks forward to seeing the Synergy-Equiinet partnership flourish:
“I like the turnkey approach with the ability to acquire as much support as schools need. This will be of great appeal to those that don’t want to opt for the DIY approach.”
MoodlePilot’s course management element enables learning materials to be shared in a controlled fashion as well as the creation of lessons with well-structured paths at the same time allowing for different pedagogical approaches. Forums and online chats can be used in a monitored environment, while quizzes and surveys maintain pupil interest as well as providing instant feedback. Assignments can be gathered and viewed online, placing less workload on teaching staff, and grades can be recorded: not only allowing online grade books but also the export to other systems. Student journals, self-assessment of submissions and student peer-group review environments all encourage pupil participation. Usefully, SCORM-compatible content can be deployed and both local and central management, as well as peering with other schools, is available.
The content distribution element of MoodlePilot provides a secure environment in which to deploy an extremely comprehensive array of eLearning software including dozens of titles and content that is not compatible with SCORM, if desired. A wide range of logs and statistics can be accessed and wide-ranging network security controls are available with options for both local and centralised management.
Equiinet was founded in 1998 and led the way in the manufacture and supply of extremely secure server appliances, giving organisations of all shapes and sizes the peace of mind to make full use of the internet. Using the company’s ability to deliver cost-effective, integrated solutions Equiinet has developed a range of products for the education sector with twin themes of the effective distribution and use of eLearning materials – complemented by eSafety, of both pupils and school network infrastructures.
