In February, for the first time, more than 200 Brits were treated in Hungary-based dental clinic, VitalEurope. Located in Budapest, and with London aftercare, VitalEurope is having to employ extra staff to accommodate the ever-growing number of British ‘dental tourists’, and expects to be even busier in the months ahead.

The VitalEurope figures are yet more proof of the soaring popularity of ‘dental tourism’ among Brits. Many are travelling to avoid a beleaguered National Health Service and long waiting lists, others for cosmetic treatment, which isn’t available on the NHS — but all are attracted by the massive cost savings.

In a recent independent survey of British patients treated in Budapest by VitalEurope, 93% said the main reason for travelling was the chance to save on the cost of treatment at home.

The survey also revealed that more than a quarter of the clinic’s British patients are spending over £5,000 on treatment, with average savings of 50% on the equivalent treatment in the UK.

As to the typical profile of a VitalEurope patient, 66% of the survey respondents were aged 40–59, while 53% were male. Dental implants were by far the most common treatment, followed by crowns and bridgework.

Reflecting the more serious dental work common with dental tourists, most VitalEurope patients stayed in Budapest for at least three days. Importantly, more than eight out of ten (82%) said they would “very likely” recommend treatment abroad to a friend or relative.

Dental tourism is becoming increasingly popular — 45,000 people from the UK travelled overseas for dental treatment in 2007, compared to 30,000 in 2006, a rise of 50%*. The number is predicted to rise as awareness grows of the high quality of dental treatment available abroad and the huge potential cost savings.

Thomas Antalffy, managing partner at VitalEurope, comments:

“Over the past year or two, the dental tourism market in the UK has simply exploded. 95% of our patients are British and we’re currently treating 200 of them a month, which is staggering. They’re choosing to travel to countries such as Hungary primarily for the cost savings, which can be considerable. There’s a huge demand, these days, for cosmetic treatment, which isn’t available through the NHS and can be extremely expensive if done privately in the UK.”
