Single Speed Bikes – From the track to the road

London – Friday 28th March 2008

Evans Cycles, the UK’s largest specialist cycle retailer, brings you a guide to the latest trend on two-wheels…

Have you been watching the track cycling on the TV and wondered how that would ever relate to the man on the street? The bikes they ride on the track are single speed bikes (all be it with carbon, titanium and other exotic materials that cost thousands of pounds) which are now widely available to buy in store and the choice has never been better.

Single speed bikes combine style with practicality. Without gears to maintain and complicate matters, the bikes commonly used by the city’s cycle couriers are hot on people’s minds when looking for the latest two-wheeled, Congestion-Charge dodging fashion accessory. But it’s not all style over content…

The bikes are easy to maintain. They’re stripped down to the bare necessities making maintenance less of an expert only operation and riding the bikes, simple. With the look and speed of a road bike, without the technical aspect of gears to complicate matters, it’s easy to see why these are the hottest bikes in town!

The Charge Plug is one of the bikes responsible for making single speeds cool. The plain colours combined with a no nonsense steel frame make this an understated and stylish classic. The slice handlebars give the bike a messenger look and help to make it a favourite among traditionalists and newcomers alike.

The Pinnacle Bachelor is one of the most practical single speeds available as it is designed to take mudguards. This makes it perfect for commuting as you can get to work a bit drier! The alloy frame and fork make for livelier handling and the dual pivot brakes stop you quicker. The bike also comes with an option of running fixed or a free rear-wheel for more versatility.

If you fancy something a bit sturdier or want to turn heads then the Cannondale Bad Boy Single is for you. The mountain bike size wheels make it perfect for city streets as they both light and tough enough to withstand the run-ins with London’s potholed and pitted road surfaces. The disc brakes mean you will always be able to stop and the single sided fork means you will definitely turn heads as people will think some of your bike is missing!
