Partnership Encompasses SIP-Based Integration for Macrocell Networks

ACTON, MA – March 31, 2008 – Tatara Systems, the leader in SIP-based femtocell convergence, and AirWalk Communications, Inc. an industry innovator in IP Radio Access Network (IP-RAN) solutions, today announced they are collaborating to deliver SIP-based femtocell and macrocell network solutions.

Tatara and AirWalk are developing a solution that enables CDMA network operators to leverage VoIP or IMS infrastructure with AirWalk’s EdgePointTM femtocell and OneRANTM macrocell solutions. A key aspect of this solution is an IOS-SIP adapter that resides in the EdgePoint or OneRAN products and communicates directly with the Tatara CDMA 1xRTT Convergence Server (TCS/CDMA-1xRTT), which is a standards-based SIP/IMS interworking application server that ensures service parity with the macro network.

“Tatara is excited to be teaming with AirWalk on this innovative approach to SIP-based CDMA network integration. Mobile operators are looking to expand radio coverage using low cost solutions that leverage commodity SIP/VoIP infrastructure for transport and control. They also desire to preserve their existing investment in the mobile core, where subscribers are provisioned, managed, and billed,” stated E.Y. Snowden, president and CEO of Tatara Systems. “AirWalk is leading the market with the introduction of advanced femtocells and IP-RAN macro radio access solutions, and we look forward to working with them.”

“The true value of this collaboration between Tatara and AirWalk is that operators can deploy both femtocell and macrocell solutions into their existing networks and retain full feature transparency while lowering overall expenditures,” stated Serge Pequeux, president and CEO of AirWalk. “These IP core networks allow operators to scale their networks gracefully and economically.”

The TCS/CDMA-1xRTT is a cost effective solution for integrating femtocells into a mobile operator’s network, and supports the service interworking and call state processing for controlling the flow of voice and messaging traffic over the IP core, while ensuring service parity with the existing macro network. Tatara and AirWalk also plan to collaborate on deploying “switchless” IP-RAN macro network solutions, where the convergence server is used to buffer the IP-RANs from having to interface directly with the MSC’s in the existing mobile core. Mobile operators now have a lower cost switching solution that can be deployed without reconfiguring or upgrading the equipment in the existing mobile core.

AirWalk’s EdgePointTM femtocell will be demonstrated at CTIA Wireless 2008, on April 1-3, 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Airwalk’s booth 7261 and Tatara Systems’ booth 3300.

About AirWalk’s EdgePoint Femtocells and OneRAN Macro IP-RAN Solutions:

EdgePoint is a compact femtocell providing cellular service to homes, small businesses, and areas of poor cellular reception. These compact devices serve as low-power access points, operating in licensed spectrum, to connect mobile devices to the mobile carrier’s network via the Internet. AirWalk is a leader in femtocells, having had extensive experience with OneRAN picocells which are used in more demanding enterprise applications. The OneRAN product line includes pico, micro, mini and macrocell IP-RAN solutions with a complete portfolio of 3GPP2 1xRTT and EV-DO Rev A products and a variety of configurations.

About the Tatara CDMA 1xRTT Convergence Server:

The Tatara CDMA 1xRTT Convergence Server can be deployed as a SIP-based application server in VoIP networks, and an IMS application server in IMS networks. It supports 1xRTT service authentication, and delivers voice, messaging, supplementary services, and emergency services to SIP-based end points, as well as support for femtocell to macro network handoff. The TCS/CDMA-1xRTT interfaces to mobile core elements including the HLR, MSC, and SMSC, using standard ANSI-41 Rev E. interfaces and protocols. It interfaces to the serving call session control function (S-CSCF) over the IMS service control (ISC) interface, and to the home subscriber server (HSS) using the Sh interface. The TCS/CDMA-1xRTT is delivered on a hardened, secure, high availability carrier-class hardware platform, with an embedded management system that supports Web, CLI, SOAP, XML, and SNMP management and alarming.

About AirWalk Communications:

AirWalk Communications, Inc. is a developer of IP CDMA Radio Access Network (IP-RAN) products that deliver 3G voice and data platforms. AirWalk’s products are modular, stackable and increase coverage and capacity. AirWalk delivered the industry's first base station and base station controller in a single, inexpensive, compact platform. The company's radio products operate on the global CDMA licensed frequencies and offer operators new sources of revenue. For more information, visit

About Tatara Systems:

Tatara Systems is the first vendor to deliver a SIP-based solution for femtocell network integration, and a leader in enabling network operators to offer converged mobile services. The Tatara Convergence Server leverages a VoIP or IMS core to give any SIP-based end point presence on a mobile operator’s network. For femtocell applications, this ensures service parity with the macro network, but without having to tie radios directly into the mobile core, circumventing the attendant scalability and interoperability challenges. Tatara is a founding board member of the Femto Forum, and is working with its customers and partners to speed the deployment of femtocells worldwide. For more information, visit
