London – Friday 18th April 2008 – Evans Cycles (est.1921), the UK’s largest specialist cycle retailer is proud to celebrate St Georges Day this year with a guide to some great British bicycles.

What better way to celebrate the national day by taking a break and riding a British bicycle! Britain used to be the world leader in bicycle production with Raleigh being the world’s largest bike company. These days there are quite a few British bike companies producing a mix of traditional and ultra modern bikes. No-matter what your taste or pocket, there’s a British bike for you.

Probably the most iconic and best known British bicycle brand is Raleigh. As well as a comprehensive range of children’s bikes, they make some classic looking adult bikes but brought up to date with modern materials and accessories. The Raleigh Pioneer Elite 2 is a hybrid bike with classic understated looks but plenty of modern day materials and accessories. If you fancy taking the other half out on a ride with you, Raleigh also make one of the most affordable tandems on the market, the Venture, for under £400.

Another iconic British bicycle brand is Pashley. Established in 1921, Pashley are one of the oldest and most established bicycle companies in the land and boast proudly that they are the manufactures of the Great British Postman’s bicycle. The company, based in Nottingham produce classic bicycles, whether it be the Princess for the lady or the Guvnor for the gentleman, the name Pashley gives you piece of mind with their quality, hand built bicycles. If you want a bike that combines traditional styling with modern equipment then Pashley has a bike for you.

One of newest British bike companies is Pinnacle bikes. Founded in 2006, this brand has quickly become a favourite with the public. From kid’s bikes to professional road racing bikes, Pinnacle have designed a full range to suit all tastes. One of the most popular models in the range is the Mean Streak 2.0 which is a city bike which combines the ruggedness of a mountain bike with the versatility of a hybrid bike. For the more traditional rider, the single speed road bike, the Bachelor, is one of the most versatile single speeds available as it can be fitted with the most recognisable of British bike accessories - mudguards!

Talking of single speed bikes, the British company Charge are responsible for producing the bike which helped to kick start the revival in single speeds – the Plug. With it’s upswept bars and understated colours this has been one of the most popular selling bikes of 2007.

If you want to take your bike on public transport then you need a folding bike. The king of folding bikes are Brompton.
