British English has seen a dramatic increase in popularity amongst language learners in the UK, according to research released today by Rosetta Stone®, the leading providers of language learning software.
The research, which charted the UK popularity of each of the 30 languages offered by Rosetta Stone, showed that British English has made the most dramatic leap in popularity in the last three years, rocketing from 14th place in 2004, to 5th place in 2007.
Other languages that proved popular with UK customers included Spanish, French, Italian and German.
Steven Wines, Managing Director for Europe at Rosetta Stone, commented: “This research gives us a great insight into the changing attitudes to language learning in the UK. The rise in interest for learning English perhaps suggests a move towards greater integration and community cohesion and I take this as an extremely positive sign.”
He continued: “This dedication to learning English is particularly impressive when compared against Britons’ notoriously weak foreign language skills. For example, a recent survey we conducted found that almost two thirds of UK residents don’t speak a second language!”
English is generally accepted to be the third most widely spoken language, understood by 320 million people worldwide*, and as we celebrate both St George’s Day and the birthday of Shakespeare on 23 April, interest in learning the language is on the increase.
