Dr Barbara Olioso is a chemist who has devoted her professional career to working solely with natural and organic cosmetics. Dr Olioso has now used her expertise and passion for the environment to develop and launch her own skincare range; Forest Secrets.
After getting a doctor degree in industrial chemistry in Venice, Barbara realized that working in a lab spending years in chemical synthesis was not for her. She wanted to do something that would give real benefit to people and that would keep her close to nature.
After getting a masters degree in Food Science and Technology Barbara found the answer to that was natural cosmetics, and in 1999 she started working with natural colours and skin care products setting up the Research and Development department at Aura-Soma Products Ltd.
From there Barbara learnt how to formulate cosmetics using only natural ingredients at a time when naturals were not so fashionable. Barbara also became an expert at selecting and sourcing top quality ingredients from all over the world. After the introduction of organic standards she developed organic certified products for third-party companies, including the first organic certified Eau De Toilettes, while working at Primavera Aromatherapy.
Barbara has worked hard to reduce the limitations behind the beauty industry’s organic standards which result in higher costs, lower product performance and creativity and a lack of chemical analysis of organic ingredients to ensure the lack of pesticides. Barbara has proved that truly, 100% natural products are effective.
But it doesn’t stop at natural. Natural also has to be sustainable. And Barbara believes that the combination of natural and sustainable is the way ahead, as natural on its own does not take into account the long term environmental impact.
The effects of the chemical burden on the body is starting to show its long term effects and this realization is proving the interdependence between humans and the environment. In other words what happens even thousand of miles away from us can affect us very closely and permanently. Thinking only about short-term gain and the near surroundings is a path to self destruction. The way forward needs to embrace a global long-term approach that goes beyond the ingredients, looking at the impact of farming natural crops in balance with the ecosystem and the communities working on the crops, and also looking at the chemical burden caused by the packaging, the manufacturing and the exhaust water. Cosmetics are a major piece of the eco-puzzle because of their growth, the ingredients used and the long term effects on human health.
When a consumer decides to go down the green path they are faced with hundreds of products claiming to be green and natural – but many of them are not. This can leave consumers feeling confused, frustrated and disillusioned.
On the challenge of natural and organic cosmetic industry is to become more sustainable and performance orientated.
Barbara has developed Forest Secrets to help overcome both these challenges; a natural and effective skincare product from a sustainable source.
Forest Secrets the only totally natural 2 step system to tailor made beauty. iRejuvenate 2 step system empowers women to tailor make their beauty regime to their individual skin and to the season, feeding the skin with the nutrients ratio that is required at the time.
Barbara’s belief is that being beautiful does not have to be at the cost of burdening the body and the environment with synthetic chemicals and being green does not have to be at the cost of outer beauty.
