St George’s Day should be a bank holiday says Safeguard, the motorhome and caravan insurance division of Swinton and Motor Caravan Magazine’s Insurer of the Year 2008.

With a measly eight public holidays a year, Safeguard is calling for tomorrow’s St George’s Day to be an official bank holiday in an effort to bring British workers in line with the rest of the EU when it comes to holidays.

Europeans have more public holidays than the British – Italians get 12 days, Austrians get 13 and the Spanish and Portuguese have 14 days.

It’s the same story in Ireland with St Patrick’s Day a public bank holiday. However here in the UK, St George’s Day isn’t given the same recognition and people are campaigning for this to be changed.

Safeguard supports the campaign to make 23rd April a bank holiday. Head of Safeguard and lifelong caravanning enthusiast, Rita Sadler said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea to make St George’s day an official bank holiday. There’s nothing more relaxing than spending a bank holiday sitting outside a caravan, cooking on a BBQ and enjoying a glass of wine. The more bank holidays we have the better!”

According to the Trade Union Congress (TUC), work related stress costs the economy £4.4 billion a year and it’s campaigning for thee more bank holidays per year.
