A UK based social network for social entrepreneurs topped 170 other European start-ups into first place In a European Web 2.0 Start-up competition, and booked a place in the official finals in Barcelona this month.
It has been announced today that out of the 171 ‘web 2.0’ start-ups to enter the Start-up 2.0 2008, a competition to award the most innovative start-up in the EU, a UK based social enterprise networking platform has finished in top place of the web 2.0 winners as voted for on Facebook.
www.UnLtdWorld.com, has today been declared the winner of a competition that sought to promote and reward the most innovative European start-ups that work in the field of Web 2.0 technologies as voted for by Facebook users.
The awards partners include La Caixa bank, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems along with media partners that include Mashable and TechCrunch and are a sought after prize for the many start up companies based across Europe.
To find the ten finalists there was a Facebook poll; which UnLtdWorld won, 6 projects selected by the International jury and three as voted for by the Alianzo blog network.
UnLtdWorld will now go on as one of the ten finalists to represent their service in Barcelona on May 21st, where they will have to pitch their service to the international panel of judges.
The jury includes Mike Butcher, the editor of TechCrunch, Google's Geomarketing services world manager Bernardo Hernández, strategist Daniel Waterhouse who prior to joining 3i spent 6 years with Yahoo, and other highly influential bloggers such as Loic Le Meur, who has recently started up Seesmic, which is a twitter-like video exchange system.
Alberto Nardelli, chief strategist of UnLtdWorld said,
“We’re absolutely delighted to be the most voted start-up on Facebook, and to have been selected amongst such a rich array of such fantastic start-ups. It’s a great reward for all our hard work to date and towards our commitment to constantly improving UnLtdWorld and providing the most powerful possible platform to support social entrepreneurs in their efforts to change their communities and the world for the better,”
“We’re really excited by the number of socially-relevant start-ups, as it demonstrates that more people are thinking around purpose and how to best use Web 2.0 to make a difference. Above all we’re truly humbled by the passion and support that we have received from the UnLtdWorld community, and having topped the “popular vote” is testimony to the fact that we genuinely place the value of users at the heart of what we do. Roll on Barcelona!”
Established in March 2008 in the UK, with support from UnLtd, the foundation for social entrepreneurs UnLtdWorld already connects thousands of active members including a number of high profile and well known business individuals along with some of the biggest names in social enterprise.
Anyone is able to join the social networking site and some of the people who have already signed up include, the CEOs of key organisations such as Bullying, UK, Cancer Buddies Network and UKAware, editors from New Consumer and The Guardian, the founders of start-ups such as Walkit.com, Quotes4Charity, Belu, Greentomato Cars, Green Knickers and Mozzo Coffee. UnLtdWorld connects some of the planet’s most exciting social entrepreneurs: ranging from hybrid taxi services in Sydney and financial services for young people in homeless associations, to ethical underwear designers in London and fair trade coffee suppliers, all the way to community-based literacy programmes in NYC, HIV/AIDS awareness raising and prevention work through sports in Nairobi and mental health support groups that work alongside the NHS (national health service) in Scotland.
UnLtdWorld is aimed at connecting social entrepreneurs, social innovators, socially-minded people and organisations that invest their efforts in changing the world for the better, and enabling these audiences to find and share targeted information.
Most social networks are built around relevance of contacts and broadcast information within circles of acquaintances. UnLtdWorld is about commonality of purpose: fostering new connections and matching information through the power of community and relevance of context and content.
UnLtdWorld is established on the principle that social entrepreneurship is a complex market with specific dynamics and changing the world for the better is a mission – it defines who you are.
UnLtdWorld isn’t about retaining eyeballs in front of a computer, or duplicating or substituting real world dynamics. UnLtdWorld aims to complement and add value to the array of fantastic positive action and efforts happening around the planet, and thereby enable even greater impact.
UnLtdWorld is driven by a constant dissatisfaction with the way the world is and by the realization that many people want to change the world for the better, and given access to proper tools, they will. UnLtdWorld wants to be one of those tools.
In parallel to fostering a vibrant community, UnLtdWorld aims to help build the capacity of social entrepreneurship, and enhance the efficiency of relations between social entrepreneurs, relevant stakeholders and the general public. We aim to do this mainly through the UnLtdWorld Research Lab, the world's most powerful mapping and graphing of social entrepreneurship, and of social and environmental issues. Through the Research Lab, UnLtdWorld provides critical social insight. Anyone, no matter their size, can access, use and take advantage of this platform, and by doing so co-create even greater value.
