Brits will make in excess of 70 million trips abroad this year . Whilst many will pack a holiday first aid kit with the usual plasters and remedies for tummy troubles, many aren’t prepared for ear infections.

Research has revealed that swimming pools can often harbour a variety of nasty bugs and bacteria , one being the main culprit of painful minor ear infections of the outer ear, also known as ‘swimmers ear.’

Swimmers ear is a mild ear infection, a common condition which affects all ages. It can be caused by swimming in unclean water, especially in hot and humid conditions or by prolonged contact with water, often affecting frequent swimmers. It can be very painful and if unprepared can ruin a holiday.

Ear specialist Rosemary Rodgers from Ear Care Services comments;

“Swimmers ear is a common complaint especially in older children and adults who swim regularly or get unclean water in their ears, for that reason people often get it while on holiday. The condition can be painful, sufferers often experience redness and swelling inside the ear canal which can become itchy. If swimmers ear is suspected it is important to keep the ears dry, wearing a cap that covers the ears while showering and bathing is a good idea.”

EarCalm is the only over the counter product for mild outer ear infections. The product is a quick and easy to use spray that works to alleviate the symptoms of the infection. By including EarCalm in a holiday first aid kit you will always be prepared to treat mild infections of the outer ear should you feel discomfort in your ears following swimming. Remember if the ear problem persists it is essential to obtain doctor’s advice.
