Football fans heading to Moscow for the Champions League final could be shown the red card if they forget about travel insurance says Swinton.

As tens of thousands of Manchester United and Chelsea supporters descend on Russia’s capital city for the final on May 21st, the UK’s leading high street insurance retailer Swinton is reminding fans to take out insurance to protect themselves against unforeseen foul play.

Swinton’s online travel policy provides up to £1,500 cover for lost or stolen baggage and up to £10m medical expenses. It will also pay up to £500 for additional accommodation and travel expense if you miss your flight due to failure of public transport or if the vehicle you’re travelling in has an accident or breakdowns. Given that Moscow boasts the world’s busiest metro system, this might prove very useful!

Steve Chelton, Swinton’s Insurance Development Manager said: “Moscow is one of the world’s largest urban areas and we’re advising people to be extra vigilant when travelling around the city – especially given the language barrier the majority of fans will encounter. Petty crime is rife in and around Red Square and pickpockets will be prevalent. Unfortunately we can’t insure against a bad result on the night, but at least both United and Chelsea fans can ensure they are covered in the event of anything else going wrong.”

Fans traveling to Moscow can purchase single-trip travel insurance travel insurance from Swinton from as little as £9.79 for a three day trip (based on a 30 year old supporter departing UK on May 20th and returning on May 22nd). Those thinking of staying longer, or who take several holidays a year in Europe, including Champions League away trips, can purchase an annual multi trip travel policy from just £31.04.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued advice to supporters traveling to Moscow for the Champions League final including advice such as you’re not allowed to smoke and drink in Red Square – it’s illegal and you will be arrested. Visit for more information.

Case study
A born and bred Manchester United fan from Burnage, Manchester, Keith Judson (36) is heading to Moscow to watch the Champions League final against Chelsea and this time he’s certainly not going to forget his travel insurance.

Last April Keith flew to Italy to watch his team get beaten in the Champions League semi-final by AC Milan. At the time Keith was suffering from a broken knee and was on crutches – his hobbling slowed him down considerably and caused him to miss his flight home. Keith said: “Not only did we get beaten 3-0, I had to shell out for a new flight home and this cost me more than my whole trip put together! I broke my knee the week before I went and if I’d had valid travel insurance then I could have cancelled my flight and got my money back. Not that a broken knee would ever stand in the way of supporting United but with hindsight it might have been the sensible option.”

Keith’s first trip to see an away match in Europe was in December 1996, when Manchester United beat Rapid Vienna 2-0 (Cantona and Giggs scored). Keith continued: “The final in 1999 was so amazing that I can’t miss out on another opportunity to see history in the making.”

Keith was taken to his first game at seven years old and he’s been a fan ever since. Both his parents are also season tickets holders and his great grandad used to ride a horse as a steward at Old Trafford .
