One of The UK’s Leading Provider of Business-to-Business Electronic Trading Standardises upon Sun’s MySQL Open Source Database

London – 28 May 2008 – Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA), today announced that First B2B Ltd, one of the leading providers of business-to-business electronic trading, is now processing more than 2 million complex transactions a year with Sun’s MySQL(TM) database software. With MySQL as the ‘central plank’ of its business, First B2B is able to support the trading transactions of more than 400 companies throughout the UK, and its entire operations are now based upon a MySQL Enterprise(TM) database subscription.

First B2B delivers a business-to-business electronic trading service, which ensures true integration for each trading partner’s computer system, without additional hardware or software being carried by any partner. First B2B’s team of e-Trading professionals has world-class skills in mapping both standard and esoteric data. The company serves many of the world’s top companies in Construction, Food, FMCG, Print, Paper, Packaging & Publishing, and Computer Manufacturing through B2B-Composer, its data transformation and communications software.

“Our business service means we are the go-between for our clients and their suppliers and customers,” said John Dyson, Technical Director for First B2B Ltd. “We use MySQL to store all of our customer documents, as well as all the data we use to create programs related to customer documents. We are now running 2 million transactions a year on top of MySQL. Our transactions are not just a standard database record with a single row -- our data typically consists of between 40 and 60 rows of data, which is the lifeblood of our business.”

First B2B migrated from Progress six years ago. After standardising on MySQL for its business, they purchased a MySQL Enterprise subscription to get access to professional technical support. Over the past six years, the company’s MySQL application has never been down other than for planned migration to a different server

“MySQL is absolutely paramount to our business,” added Dyson. “We’re only a small company, so everything needs to be automated. All our products have a Web front-end with MySQL behind it, so literally hundreds of customers use it. Sun’s MySQL technical support is the best I’ve seen in the software industry -- and we can honestly say MySQL is the best IT decision we’ve made.”

MySQL Enterprise is a comprehensive subscription, consisting of production-tested software, proactive monitoring tools, and premium support services. More information is available at
