Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK; 4 June 2008 – A revolutionary new respiratory protection device has been developed by sport scientists at Brunel University. For the first time people exercising in a polluted environment will have the peace of mind that their health is being protected effectively from the damaging effects of pollution.
PUREbreathe® is a lightweight, multi-purpose breathing filter that removes hazardous particles from inhaled air, as well as filtering out bacteria and viruses. It is designed to be worn primarily by urban exercisers, such as runners and cyclists, to filter particulate air pollution, but actually filters all ambient dust. It can also help those suffering from hay fever by filtering out pollen.
PUREbreathe offers a revolutionary design, involving the use of an air-tight mouthpiece with very low resistance to air flow, which at a stroke overcomes the limitations of existing mask-based devices. It is transparent and made from silicone, with high-tech removable filters that act like a sieve to attract and hold particles before they enter the mouth.
PUREbreathe inventor, Professor Alison McConnell, a sport scientist and respiratory specialist at Brunel University, explains. “Whether you are an elite athlete, or simply cycle to work, PUREbreathe will allow you to exercise safely in an urban environment, as well providing protection from pollen. The device is also suitable for people with physically active outdoor occupations that expose them to pollution and dust. It’s small, lightweight and fits neatly into the wearer’s mouth.”
LifeLab Innovations, the Brunel spin-out company that has developed PUREbreathe, was commissioned in 2007 by UK Sport to develop the device specifically for athletes competing in demanding environmental conditions, or in areas with poor air quality.
As a result of this commission, PUREbreathe will be made available exclusively to Team GB athletes competing at the Olympic Games in Beijing. A batch of ‘replica’ products will be marketed to the public on August 25, the day after the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony when LifeLab will also be seeking to licence the product.
