“Roughly two thirds of the sample could be virtualised but approximately half the sample would need some remedial work or deployment with dependent components”

Changebase AOK, the world leading automated application compatibility tool, today revealed that 87% of typical applications may have issues deploying in a Virtualised environment, but that using its tool, AOK Virtualise-IT, these can be identified in minutes and 70% of resolvable problems can be automatically fixed, saving 200-300 man days per 100 applications over manual testing and remediation.

The independent study put a random sample of 100 applications that are heavily used and relied upon enterprise applications through its AOK Virtualise-IT testing suite. The aim was to try to quickly establish numbers that will help organisations to better understand the issues that they might face when moving to a Virtualised platform; and to define what is required to enhance their use virtualisation technology.

From this sample, 38 had compatibility issues that would prevent them from being virtualised at all; with example issues including non-supported network updates, service installations, drivers and DSN settings; a further 49 could be virtualised with some remedial work and the remaining 13 apps raised no issues.

“The team ran an additional series of automated checks looking for compliance with best practice or vendor recommendations to ensure that the application was appropriately configured to function correctly, “ said Grant Ford at Changebase AOK. “The AOK tool has fifteen separate classes of checks which ask questions like “Can this package ever work in a virtual environment, can this application be reconfigured to work in a virtual environment and does this package have dependencies that are required for it to operate correctly?”

Excluding the office file dependency notifications, 219 issues were raised across six different categories for the 49 applications requiring attention. In total, AOK could fix 155 taking just 2 minutes to complete. The remaining 64, required a packager decision, to be remediated manually. Of the top five categories of issue that required remediation, four of them were automatically fixable in AOK.

“Of the issues and information revealed by AOK, the largest group was the identification of the need for MS office availability. i.e. an application wants to use a Microsoft Office application and if this is not loaded in the Virtual environment the application will experience problems,” he added.

“131 informational messages were raised across 16 of the applications that could be virtualised showing that they had a dependency on office components being available to them which proved interesting, as the biggest concern that clients had voiced was the ability to be able to identify dependant middleware or missing dependencies, “ Grant concluded.
